    Overstay question

I am going to have an overstay for the first time since I came to Thailand to live.

It is only going to be for a day or 2 but I can't avoid it because I have to leave my passport at the Brazilian embassy for processing of a work visa.

My question is will it have any effect on me re-entering the country?

I have 2 UK passports so can enter again on the one that doesn't have the overstay stamp. I should have entered on that one last time if I had any sense of forward planning but I was probably feeling the effects of my usual flight Xanax.

    you will have no issues

it used to be that if it was only 1 day you didn't even have to pay a fine

I have overstayed about 3 times in the last 10 years and have never had a problem

Yeah they really don't care about overstays. You have to pay the fine anyway and the matter is closed after that.

So long as you get to the airport - no problem.

Only problem seems to be if you get picked up by police in the street while on overstay.

keep your head down and you should have no problem....

Grab a 7 day extension, no overstay stamp then.

Might be a possibility... Would they give an extension 1 week before current entry stamp expires?

All to do with timing... I need to get the passport in to the Brazil embassy as soon as it opens again after Songkran holidays (after first confirming they have my visa approval through from Brazil). Bit of a clusterfuck really as I need the same passport to enter Australia for my next work which they can't give me any definate date for yet...

I think you can get a 7 day extension early, go ask and explain your situation and that you want to not be on overstay but that your passport needs to go to the embassy.

^^^Not wishing to be a grammar nazi or in my case hypocrite..... but he did yse the phrase "I have to" which does rather suggest a future event.

Ive had two passports for this reason, the need to comply with thai law, i.e always carry your passport without exception, and the need to give my passport to embassies for visas. Ive always managed to use one passport for entering and leaving Thailand and the other for all my non-thai visas.
Is there a reason that you cannot give your second passport, without the thai entry stamp, to the Brazilian embassy. If for some reason the Brazilians will only issue a wp to a passport with a thai entry stamp in it, explain the situation and see if they will accept photo copies of the passport with the entry stamp with the application.
    Then go get an extension.

as for an overstay, if you get stopped before you get to the airport overstaying.... then may well be fucked, a bit, the IDC's not very nice and you may well discover that your wife really means it when she said you make the mess you live with it

Once you get to the airport, from what I understand they really do not care about short overstays as long as you can pay the fine... which I believe is waved if the over stay is less than 24 hours.

Ive always been a bit paranoid about getting an overstay as I have in the passed filled out visa application forms which have asked, one way or another, if I have ever broken the terms of a visa to any country in the past? I would rather honestly answer no, than take the risk of lying.

^ Yes Hazz... My mistake on this occasion was entering Thailand on the passport that needed visas processing on it. The passport number was specified on the original Brazil visa application a couple of months ago so it has to be that passport.

Because of my god like organisational skills, I've managed to find myself in the position to need these extensions a number of times on short notice.

Sometimes I get the extension, some times I get a stamp stating that the application was rejected an stating the date that I must leave the country... which just happens to be date I asked for. (only in thailand?)

With this amazing ability to simtaniously implement to mutually exclusive outcomes, I have sometimes wondered what would happen if they chaps tried to carry out the schrodinger cat experiment....

^^you'r a bit buggered then. extensions are quite quick at government complex... about 30-60 minutes + traveling time. It is hastle and 2k... gut you do get peace of mine and you won't risk finding out if wiffy really means no pitza

The embassy opens again on the 17th... I don't think Jomtien immigration will be open until the 21st (but that is a guess just now).

My current entry stamp in the country runs out on 25th.

There is a 5 day processing time for the Brazil visa.

I might be needed in Australia before the end of the month.

I am currently in some Hicksville village near Isaan getting slowly drunk.

Looks like you don't have anything to worry about as long as you don't get too drunk to manage the trip from Hicksville to bkk on the 16th

    Yep, this is true.
Even long overstays aren't an issue if one can easily pay the fine.

There is no such extreme black-listing as it applies to past overstay.

They would open the box to find the cat had been eaten.

I would have thought a half eaten zombie cat would be more likely.

I need to first confirm with the embassy that they have the approval through from Brazil before making an appointment. Plan to drive home to Pattaya on 17th and make appointment in Bkk embassy for the next day.
With the 5 day processing time that would be 25th for picking it up. Could get flights out that same night but things could never work out that smoothly... So I am factoring in a day or 2 delay due to Brazilian/Thai/my incompetence which means the overstay.

Minor inconvenience if you get picked up whilst on overstay, Heard the immigration detention centre is awesome.

still the same; they see you have overstayed, ask you to follow them to a desk, process your stamp with squiggly writing then say "no fine as only one day"

In my case, I will be overstaying my 14 day tourist visa by 5 days, should I get a 7 day extension? I am staying quite close to the immi in jomtien on Friday if I can get there in time. Would be ok just to lob up at the airport?

^ would be 1900 baht at immigration for the extra week or 2500 baht at the airport for the overstay. If it is convenient and you can keep your things dry on Friday would be better to get the 7 day extension.
