| Thanks for info. Have to go there in a few weeks for my Non-Imm B visa. People say Vientiane is like old-style BKK (Frenchified) and there are plenty of hotels in town (backpacker to comfy class). Can't say I'm looking forward to the Thai bureaucracy but hope my g/f has as much clout there as she does locally.

DD - another question or two as I do this shit later today and the last time I did this was 2 or 3 years ago : Go and hit the currency exchange and get 35 US dollars in nice clean untorn notes if you are a lovely UK person, now this is needed as you do need a visa to enter Lao, your Lao visa is valid for one month 1. Dollars - do I get that on the Thai side of the border BEFORE I go over? Is it near the immigration counter? right you got your visa time to get out of Thailand, 2. Where did I get the visa before I left Thailand? for your visa you also need a couple of passport pictures and a photocopy of your main passport page. 3. You are talking about the Thai visa not the Laos visa? 4. 250 Baht for a tuk tuk to the capital? Fuck what happened to the minivans they had 2 or 3 years ago for 100 Baht?

1) There are NO money changing facilities at the border. Get your dollars beforehand! 2) You get the Laos visa at the border within 10 minutes - one photo required, or a 1 $ surcharge. You can also get the visa beforehand in Bangkok - same day processing for an "express fee", which is similar to what you pay at the border. 3) Thai visa. They do insist on the pics. 4) You can still get to Vientiane for 100 bt by tuk-tuk, or much less by public transport.

Well that is pretty much it. There is a tour company doing Bangkok to Laos visa runs and from what I understood they charged 6,000 Baht a trip including via fees. In any event. Exchanged money at the airport. $35. When we arrived at the border about 12 of us at 7 o'clock we had to pay "overtime fees". 5 Baht extra for the bus over the bridge which makes it 20 Baht and $1 extra at the Laos border for arriving after 6 o'clock. Visa fees range. The American in the front of the Q paid $36, the Chinese woman was next and paid 1,000 Baht and I paid $31. Everyone got a different price for their visa. The collection of the passport was a bit odd. For 50 Baht the minivan taxi driver took the page and brought back the passport before those waiting in the Q got theirs. Strange thing that!

DD, I've probably got hold of the wrong end of the stick here but you do all that for a visa run? When you say "visa-run", do you mean the usual "every-90-days" rigmarole? I ask because when I go to NK, it's a lot quicker and simpler than that. I get a Lao visa from the Lao Consulate in KK, drive to the bridge, park at the moron's car park (yep, I agree!), then walk over to the bridge and go through the admin there. Hop on the bus over to Laos, go through immigration there and then come straight back. Well, after stocking-up on Beer Lao Dark, that is. I have a Non-Immigrant type "O" and just do the usual 90-day run, the last one just before it runs out as I'm sure everybody else does. Are you talking about actually applying for a new Thai visa at the end of the 15 months?
