Teaching In Thailand Being a international school teacher in Thailand can be a great career with salaries in the range of $2,500 to $6,000 per month, or you could become a TEFLer teaching English with a salary range of 350-600 pounds per month, although with many teaching jobs it could be worth doing a TEFL course even if no experience is necessary, but will teaching students fulfil your overseas jobs yearnings? Is a English language teaching job something you really want to do? Can you teach English?

Isn't that the way every problem is solved? One step at a time?

Get off your computer and do something constructive for a change. Cutting on me is idiotic. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything Flash.

not every problem is solved one step at a time, get off your high horse and don't judge me or the way i spend my time, who are you to say that your time is spent more constructively than mine or anyone elses that you have never met on a web forum. you need to relax a little, you offered advice its up to who ever asked the question if the want to take your advice, harping on and on from your moral high ground is more for your benefit than anyone elses. Do you want a string of replies saying how great you are with all your wisdom?
another option is for the 3 teachers who know to speak to the new teacher, let new teacher know that he/she is involved in a scam and give new teacher the opertunity to make things right? I unlike you am not claiming to have an answer thats cut in stone, but that is another option..
there is no need for this thread even, if there are 3 adults who i assume have some level of education i'm sure they could assemble some sort of plan between them.
save your moral crusade for more worthy causes and don't judge people you know nothing about.
and if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all xlineshooter.............

Flash, I wrote you 3 sentenses, none insulting. But, you write me 3 paragraphs of mostly insults. And for a second time. If you can't disagree respectfully and offer up ONLY advise to the original poster, then you my friend are way out of line. You need to relax, I don't as I said what I meant and I meant what I said.

Let me get this straight. The school hasn't noticed that the new employee does not have the requisite skills (English) to do the job properly. Neither have they noticed that she's apparently changed sex?

^That bit is confusing me too.

I know Thai schools can be bad, but not even knowing who the teachers are is unbelievable.

I'm a teacher and work with 2 Philippinos who are quite competent. My suggestion would be to wait and see if she is a good teacher or not. If she's good (an asset to the children) say nothing, but if she is worthless, this would be a quick simple way for the school to get rid of her.

^ Huh? Seriously? To both you & Bob.

This woman was not the one interviewed & given the job. Hence, references, qualifications and interview responses that were given and the job offer was based on are null and void. This woman might not have a valid visa. She might not have a valid teaching certificate. She might have no qualifications at all. She might even have a criminal record. She might have been sacked from her last job for some grave misdemeanour. Probably none of those apply - but checking all of those things is why resumes and interviews are used and employers don't just go out on the street and pick someone they like the look of to fill their vacancies.

You two would advocate just waiting and seeing how she does - while meantime she's in contact with the kids all the time? And nothing is known about her?

I did not advocate waiting, but said it is a point I could agree too if the three teachers are uncomfortable with reporting this problem.

Now, you cast a different light on the subject, and its a good point which brings us back to the "what about the children" question. I would report it. But, now I think these teachers have enough input to make their own decision. Afterall, they have to live with whatever decision they make, we don't. But, I for one would like to hear the outcome.

Welcome to the Thai education system. Some schools care not, as long as they have someone standing in front of the class.

Welcome to the Thai education system. Some schools care not, as long as they have someone standing in front of the class.
I can attest to that, and add to it as well. I live in a poor farming district. There are 14 villages with primary and secondary schools, some shared by 2 or more villages. One of the most agonizing problems for us non Thai speakers is not being able to communicate when shopping. The clerks are all young and should know English, but they don't. I visit my wifes secondary class often and see her trying to teach grammer to kids who don't have basic English skills, so I started visiting the primary schools to get some answers. Here's what I found:
1. Many Thai teachers seem very complacent. They stand in front of their classes and drone on in a very boring fashion.
2. The kids get bored and don't try to learn but Thai education policy is to pass them anyway.
3. when they enter secondary school they are so far behind they couldn';t learn English if they wanted to.

IMHO, the problems line up thusly:
1. The school Administrator
2. The teachers
3. The inability to fail a student and pass them on to Secondary school.

I have to add here that I speak only from my own experience in a rural district. I do not believe the problem is as bad in some of the larger city schools. I am personal friends with a Thai gentlemen who is head of linguistics at a very large city school. He is the best English teacher I have encountered in Thailand.

Knowing what to teach is easy, knowing how to teach is a very different story.

so you think it is important for Thai's in Thailand to know English because it would be easier for you to do your food shopping?
you have come up with some theries and where to lay blame for these issues, have you considered learning the language of the country you live in and stop looking down on kids and education standards?

Flash, what an uninformed idiot you are..!!! You should shut up and stop making yourself look so foolish to the other posters.

I wouldn't waste my time gracing your post with a reply. It would only serve to perpetuate this pointless exchange. You live your life and stay the hell out of mine.

I had a similar argument with my boss about a guy who was showing clear signs of mental illness (claimed to be the prince of Thailand and was being chased by the Chinese mafia)

I said the guy shouldn't be in a classroom for another minute, boss said "how can we help him get to the end of term?"
