    Joined handwriting?

I will be the first to admit I don't know shit about teaching.

Here is where I am confused. The argument is joined handwriting as the Brits say. Many people still believe that is the only way to write.

Who really gives a damn? Isn't everything really done on the keyboard in today's world?

I am just a dumb American but even 15 years ago everything had to be typed.

    What is a class report?

A report provided to the teacher. I require mine to be handwritten as well. Fooking C&P from the internet if you don't have that requirement.

Don't know what joined handwriting is either....but I'm an American...

Joined handwriting = cursive script (letters joined) as opposed to printed writing, or unjoined letters. My handwriting was never worth a knob of nanny goats, but handwriting ability must remain an essential skill, surely?

Why would some instructor require handwritten/cursive instead of typed? Unless it's a test. Which is good.

True, easy to cut and paste and plagiarize.

    But what about the eyes.

And you can ask for bibliographical sources (not that anyone ever really checks them.)

Well, in Thailand it at least shows that the student has written the work themselves, even if it isn't their own.

I have my students use print rather than cursive. Doesn't do them much good if I can't read their crap handwriting....and in high school my cursive looked like shit, so I can't fault the students.

Enforcing neat penmanship stresses higher levels of discipline -- necessary for increasingly complex grammatical structures and spellings. Which is why it's taught in second or third grade.

I haven't written cursive in 30 years. When writing by hand, I NORMALLY PRINT IN ALL CAPS ONLY BECAUSE IT'S EASIER.

    Function over form.

I have to agree with milkman here, I normally insist on all homework being typed on a PC and handed in electronically, either uploaded onto the office PC or sent to me by email. Its normally fairly obvious when something is copied and a quick C&P into google will normally prove the point. With regards to students handwriting skills I find that the majority have pretty good writing skills even if their composition skills do not match.
