There's a series called "Speaking Extra" (also Listening, Reading and Writing Extra books) by Cambridge I think which has a good series of activities and copiable sheets etc might also be useful.

Isn't that the truth. There's some English language program on Thai Tee Wee in the morning and I shudder at the way the instructor pronounces some things. Just amazing.

yeah - it might be better use of your time to focus on learning new vocab rather than trying to change an entire nations incorrect pronunciation....

Just had to go back to this, was certain that you had said 35 Bht.

By heck, they are expensive in your local supermarket, aren't they?

Despite the likely slurring of words , at the end of a lesson ,

would have thought that 3 large bottles, would present a better deal on your part!

Anyway, :thanks:, for another good thread!

The pay is indeed dismal. You're doing this as a favour,

    which begs the question then...

    Are they shaggable?

Yes, but I won't. I suspect the 20 YO is untouched and the younger one, from my point of view, is untouchable for at least 4 or 5 years. My god, she hasn't even hit puberty yet....

Totally agree with you. I just actually wrote something about this on my site. But try to change the system is a tough one.

Yes, agree with you, the pay for teaching English in Thailand sucks unless you are in a top private school or international school.

In this case it's kind of a fun thing to do on the side, which is not a bad thing at all.

I think most people are better off avoiding teaching English in Thailand where possible though - unless it's a casual thing as in this case.

The lessons have been going quite well. Up to twice a week now and the hour just flies by. Although I portray myself as being a shy, reclusive, loner, I'm actually quite gregarious and a good conversationalist.

My goal in these classes is to get these girls talking and using the English they already know. I'm not worried too much by grammatical errors; I just want to get them to talk and listen naturally.

This evening we mostly discussed food likes and dislikes. They were curious about Western breakfast cereal so I brought a sample that they could try. I also got each of them to imagine and then describe driving instructions to a particular place; a restaurant for the older one and her school for the younger one. They both did quite well, but it was interesting to watch them orient themselves geographically as they went through the driving instructions. Clearly, neither of them are visual thinkers.

For the next lesson, this Sunday, I've promised to show them my new house. They seem fascinated by all the fruit trees I've planted and are anxious to see the pond in progress.

    So far, so good.

(And no, temptations aside, I'm drinking the beers after the lessons, not during.)

^How many other teachers here get paid in beer? Usually it's three Singha, but tonight I got four Chang instead. I wonder what's up with that?

Well, four Chang at 20 baht vs. three Singha at 30 baht. Looks like a demotion to me....

Maybe they want me to wear beer goggles when gazing at the Uni student....

sorry mate. Completely mis-read the post as being the other way. Must be that I'm used to you talking about going to get the Chang, rather than the Sing...
