| Teaching In Thailand Being a international school teacher in Thailand can be a great career with salaries in the range of $2,500 to $6,000 per month, or you could become a TEFLer teaching English with a salary range of 350-600 pounds per month, although with many teaching jobs it could be worth doing a TEFL course even if no experience is necessary, but will teaching students fulfil your overseas jobs yearnings? Is a English language teaching job something you really want to do? Can you teach English? |

I usually use 1 or 2 stuffed animals to keep things moving and for student talking time. one stuffed animal (tiger) is always "ask" one stuffed animal (elephant) is always "answer" Once the personal pronouns are presented (visual and oral), I model the ask-answer (T-T) two or three times to myself. Then, 1. I or a student will throw the "answer" animal to another random student 2. I or a student with throw the "ask" animal to another random student. The Q: and A: is on the board, with a _____ for the personaliztion or usage of words (verbs, nouns) they already know, if their vocab is big enough (you said false beginner) I later substitute the blanks ______ with other words, and eventually erase the entire sentence from the board entirely, once they get it in their head. The Q and A is good for rythm and stress, too. The will ask a modeled question: where's he/she/we/they going/doing/ etc. Plural pronouns can be done with two or more Ss. and "We" also. The small stuffed animals keep students upbeat because it's random and they don't know who'll have it thrown to them next. If a student or certain students are thrown too often I throw them and balanced it out so all (and weaker) students can participate. Am I on track with your question? P.S. Squirrel, I'll likely be in Korea within 4-6 months, no doubt about it.

It's also hard to Squirrel's students to understand Thai language, as they are not Thai. Last edited by Marmite the Dog : 14-08-2007 at 10:19 AM. Reason: Removed abuse, however true it may have been.

| one shouldn't be so abusive to newbies Milkman as I may run off and take my wisdom elsewhere. can't see any problem with using a bit of Thai in the class room with beginners if it helps the lesson along. |

Yes, at times L1 can help facilitate something with lower levels. However Squirrel has relocated to a nation whose language he doesn't speak, and he's just arrived. He's also not studying his pimsleur download either.

| I'm following this thread because I have similar problems when teaching Germans, especially those who've already learned English. Germans use a lot more reflexive verbs than the English and they never know when to say me or to me. They often don't get it right in their own language. It's difficult to find an interactive example for every case, although It does help if I explain things in their language. |

| I tried making a case for using L1 on ajarn.com once and was virtually hounded out of the place by the righteous Celta brigade there. I like to use a reasonable amount of Thai if it helpls - can't see the problem with it. |

| I don't have that problem with teflers here because they can't teach English for interpreting, you have to have very proficient German for that. I do get some in my classes though, those who want to study as translators. My problem is getting English speaking Germans to think round their ingrained mistakes. |
