New work permit requirement: Lesson plans

    You heard that right.

I was applying for a new work permit, same job mind you, and they asked where my lesson plans were. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded, as was the admin lady from my school who's been at this forever and seen/heard everything. I work for an international school up north and am licensed and all. As you well know, they would already have every document possible on me in triplicate save my baptismal record FFS.

Oh, yes well it's a new requirement. Something about the military (I'm not buying it...) and do get back to us with those if you want the permit. They said it was a new nationwide requirement which started last week. No information on the specific content they were interested in, nor format, or time period the plans should cover. Just said to bring English language lessons and they need to be high quality. I pointed out that I'm a history/economics teacher, but that did not compute.

Admin lady said whatever, we'll just reprint some old BS and slap your name on it, they'll never know. Said it was right up there with the most bizarre isht she's seen, but hardly surprised. So, I'm to head back there tomorrow with lesson plans to prove I'm legit. Jeez

Anyone else encountered this yet? My principal called them up and they confirmed it. He told them in no uncertain terms that they wouldn't know good lesson plans if they saw them and this was either a pointless troll on their part or an attempt to co-opt teachers' work without permission or justification.

These pencil pushers just more and more are becoming parodies of themselves. The absurd pretentiousness of it knows no boundaries. Maybe next time they'll want to drop in and observe my classes, give me an eval or explain the finer points of classroom management. One can only hope!

A better chance that there is no confusion within the continuing bureaucracy - part of the ongoing game.

I was thinking along the lines of the same thing...

    Chef > recipe book
    Doctor > x-rays, charts
    Actor > scripts
    Fisherman > nautical maps
    Bartender > wine list

KW, I suppose that is indeed the justification. But they are hardly the proper authorities to do it. They don't know the first thing about teaching, curriculum or lesson planning. Khurusapah should. But for the work permit office to demand 'high quality' lesson plans is offensive and a waste of everyone's time.

Sounds completely insane - all the more so as there is already in place a mechanism for certifying teachers in Thailand.

I personally would have no idea what a lesson plan looks like, and less so how to differentiate a "high quality" one from a piece of dross. I doubt a random work permit oick would either.

Make sure you copy them in triplicate and sign each sheet.

^Yes, and be sure to sign it exactly the way you signed your passport. Well, I must have been drunk or feeling especially whimsical the day ten years ago when I signed my passport. I constantly have these chickenheads making me sign it again the 'correct' way, even at the bank.

But back to the main point, I agree. What on earth do they think they know about teaching or even English? Are they to have an in-house Thai teacher to critique the plans? Farcical.

Do you know of any Thai teacher capable?

Might as well have an immigration officer looking at your lesson plans.

Possible they are just collecting data. The more they collect, the better they look. Job security. The uncertainty concerning the future knows no bounds.
