    Newton's Laws of Motion

Doesn't one of Newton's Laws discuss countervailing forces? Isn't there something about a body or a substance will continue to expand unless there is a countervailing force?

    Norts?

    Sabang?

    Somebody?

Newtons laws don't discuss expansion (of gases). It is the laws of movement.

    The third law however states

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Okay, maybe it's not one of Newton's laws. Isn't there a physics theory about expansion and countervailing force? A body will continue to expand unless there is a countervailing force?

With expansion you are talking of gases, correct?

I am not aware of any physical law regarding expansion and countervailing force. However the laws about gases give properties of gases under a given pressure where the pressure could be seen be the countervailing force.

Newton's first law of motion states that every object in a uniform state of motion will remain in motion unless a countervailing external force is applied to it.

Attaboy mentioned expansion and I took it as meaning gases. Maybe that interpretation was wrong and he was thinking of movement of objects not expansion?

    I think it's Boyle's Law(s) you need to reference...
One is that the volume of a gas varies inversely to pressure applied...
Apply pressure to a gas in a container and as the pressure increases, the volume of the gas decreases...

    Hope this helps...

You are referring to Newtons third law of dynamics Atta.
    Now, what is the Issue?

That doesn't sound right That's nothing to do with either expansion or (in my guess above) movement.

1st Law: Every object in a uniform state of motion will remain in motion unless a countervailing external force is applied to it
2nd Law: When a force acts upon a body, it imparts an acceleration proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the body and in the direction of the force
3rd Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
4th Law: A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm
(not sure about that last one )

    That's Asimov, not Newton.

Edit : Just mentioned above already. ^

As DrBob mentioned, the OP is confusing Newtons laws of motion with Boyles laws of gases.

And turns out it is the Zeroth Law, not Fourth.

Aeh, he did mention Boyle's Law and you corrected articulated Newton's Law which is counter-intuitive to humans, because we live on a planet with forces of gravity, friction and so on, that cause objects to slow down and stop moving.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was thinking of expanding gases and the need for a countervailing force to contain it.

The Animal Control and Welfare Commission of San Francisco has taken steps to ban the sale of goldfish, according to SFGate. The idea is that citizens will be discouraged from buying any pets on impulse. The ban includes puppies, kittens and other small pets as well.

Fish are bred in mass amounts in terrible conditions or they are taken from the wild, which has a negative effect on their ecosystem, according to the article

Although the ban seems to stem from good intentions, it has a fair amount of opponents, namely, pet shop owners.

What do you think? Is the city taking too much control, or not enough?

We need science to combat these people. If we can't establish a countervailing force within the city limits, we must establish a containment field at the county line. Any suggestions on how to keep this mindset from expanding? I mean what's next anti-circumcision laws?

That depends on how you look at it.

It is the Zeroeth Law as it is the higher law in the series of laws. However it is the fourth law as it has been amended much later to the three Laws Of Robotics initially introduced by Isaac Asimov.

    1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

And when it comes to arguing with them at the next city council meeting, logic and reasoning won't work. It must be science, raw naked unadulterated science, so they have nowhere to turn, so they have nowhere to hide. Do you think they will face science? Or will they spontaneously combust their ashes sucked into a rent in the earth?

What? You've never heard of the anti-circumcision law on the city ballot? It wasn't mentioned in Boon's epic San Francisco Values topic?

You've never heard of Foreskin Man? The super hero who fights evil mohels? He's the brainchild of the anti-Semitic who wrote the proposed anti-circumcision law.
