an interesting article on the 'new team'....

Gen. David H. Petraeus, the new U.S. commander in Iraq, is assembling a small band of warrior-intellectuals -- including a quirky Australian anthropologist, a Princeton economist who is the son of a former U.S. attorney general and a military expert on the Vietnam War sharply critical of its top commanders -- in an eleventh-hour effort to reverse the downward trend in the Iraq war.Army officers tend to refer to the group as "Petraeus guys." They are smart colonels who have been noticed by Petraeus, and who make up one of the most selective clubs in the world: military officers with doctorates from top-flight universities and combat experience in Iraq.
Essentially, the Army is turning the war over to its dissidents, who have criticized the way the service has operated there the past three years, and is letting them try to wage the war their way.
WP: Petraeus' team of warrior-PhDs - washingtonpost.com Highlights - MSNBC.com

these seem like dedicated and able individuals, but as put forth by others in the article, IMO it's too late. 4 years of incompetence and arrogance have brought us to this point, and the american public doesn't have the patience to wait another four.

i don't see how petraeus is going to turn everything around in iraq before the summer of next year...pres. candidates will be falling all over themselves to either distance themselves from the president and his failed war, or promising to get the troops out the earliest possible date.

even patraeus and his group must know it's over.

I read this article too, Ray.

Many military analysts and experts at the war college and elsewhere are saying that it's too late.

Calmly, the Sheik watched as the Marines detained the two young men in the house, volunteering that if they were “bad guys” he was happy to see them go. “You and I are going to find a way to work together to make this area better,” he told Lt Friel, “like Ramadi.” The Sheik added that it was “Iranians and foreigners” who were destabilizing his tribal area. “Iranians are forcing out the doctors and teachers. Soon this town will look like Afghanistan.”

The Sheik repeatedly emphasized his interest in working with the Marines in order to protect his tribe against the Shia. Next to halting AQI’s brutal terror campaign against the Sunni tribes, the largest worry in Anbar Province is that Shia – a generic term ranging from Iranians to the Prime Minister Maliki’s government in Baghdad – will stamp out the Sunni in Anbar.

Why do you think any of this is good news
They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child. May God mete them the punishment they deserve

errr... Hearts and minds that think the central government is trying to ethnically cleanse them? How long do you think it will take the US Marines to reslove this intractable problem?

They might leave then... but i expect they will be followed home... Iraq is weird... the first war to be fought almost soley with the techniques of urban terrorism... The Arab veterans from Iraq are going to be far more suited and trained to attack America than the Afghan Arabs who fought using rural guerilla war tactics. "No, America never loses a war, it never suffers defeat, for in the national narrative, in the fables and myths told the masses, America is blessed by the Christian god, she is good and everything else evil, she is right and all else wrong, her soldiers fight only for freedom and democracy, not for corporate and elite power."

One of the most elegant statements of the 'great myth' I have come across.

Well, their lost wars never have any consequences, it's not like they lose territory or have to pay reparations, change the way their country is run or have someone else's military in their homeland.
Just lost political and financial revenue.

Yeah, right-wing blogs have a lot more 'punch', exposing the Jihad loving commies, traitors like Carter and all...

Pity you haven't come up with any source nor argument that's been left unrefuted.

The Dixie Pigs are to the 2000s what Hanoi Jane was to the 70s, pal - anti-American traitors aiding the enemy and furthering Islamo-communism.

Then they are just like you, 5555555555555555 except you, you're just a sore loser. I pay respect to your Grandfather as he did respect HIS country and serve. His country might have been wrong on a lot of points (just like the US) but he stood with it and that does deserve some respect.

That's a new tune, usually I get attacked for my grandfathers supposedly being Nazis, when irrate dimwit posters run out of arguments.
That new tune is as far from the truth as the old one, dude!
It's the usual strawman routine...

Boon Mee - do you really believe this poll? Come on. Taken from 'Newsbusters - Exposing and Combating Liberal Media Bias'. What the hell do you expect from such a publication?

You missed the statistic - 53 percent say Congress should stop funding additional troops.

What's funny is that the statistic you quote is nowhere in that article. Oh well, never mind.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.
