PARIS (Reuters) - A French regional newspaper quoted a French secret service report on Saturday as saying that Saudi Arabia is convinced that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan last month.
L'Est Republicain printed what it said was a copy of the report dated September 21 and said it was shown to President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and France's interior and defence ministers on the same day.
"According to a usually reliable source, the Saudi services are now convinced that Osama bin Laden is dead," the document said.
"The information gathered by the Saudis indicates that the head of al Qaeda was a victim while he was in Pakistan on August 23, 2006, of a very serious case of typhoid which led to a partial paralysis of his internal organs."
The report, which was stamped with a "confidential defence" label and the initials of the French secret service, said Saudi Arabia first heard the information on September 4 and that it was waiting for more details before making an official announcement.
Officials contacted by Reuters in Chirac's and Villepin's offices had no immediate comment.
A senior official in Pakistan's interior ministry said: "We have no information about Osama's death."
Saudi-born Bin Laden was based in Afghanistan until the Taliban government there was overthrown by U.S.-backed forces in late 2001. Since then, U.S. and Pakistani officials have regularly said they believe he is hiding somewhere on the rugged border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The last videotaped message released by bin Laden was in late 2004, but there have been several low quality audio tapes released this year.

Typhoid is a cave disorder with puss and blood and vomit. I'm glad I wasn't there to witness the ordeal. We'll miss you, brother. RIP or whatever they say your country.

That's a good point Milkman. In fact every enemy of the state in any nation will be replaced. Doesn't it seem like 15th Century public disembowelment in that we cheer for the death of the bad guy when we know the next will probably be worse? We are celebrating someone's death and missery. He didn't see himself as bad. Do you think he was lying there in agony in his puke lamenting everything he did and saw it as wrong?

I think the US would prefer him to remain alive.

If he dies he wil be hailed as a martyr and become an icon for others to follow
I doubt they will recognize his death

bin Laden would only be a martyr if the U.S. caught him and executed him.

For all we know the CIA could have someone dress up like him and allegedly produce more and more tapes. Don't underestimate the politcal gain of keeping him alive. It would be harded to justify our presense there if all the 9-11 perps were caught.

I find him also amusing, a grande character from the past. Almost too stereotyped. Ironically, an Hollywood character.

    ^

    absolutely.

i found chavez's speech at the UN somewhat troubling, and i'm wondering why he went so far over the top.

however, he's too politically savvy to put on a display like that and not have it be part of a larger design.

You have to be flamboyant if you dont have charisma. Castro is sick and in the hospital. Who else to do it? Bush does it once a month or more to audiances that eat it up. At least he didnt take his shoe off and smash it on the podium like a gavel like Nikita did. After that people took the USSR a lot more seriously.

Fucking Nixon tried to fix it by taking him to Disneyland. This was about 1960 or 61 and he was vice president. Who then lost to Kennedy.

FYI...chavez is up for a temp. security council seat in a couple of weeks and he says he has the votes. we'll see.

secondly, if bin laden is dead, the boys in washington are going to have a harder time than ever trying to justify why the military is in iraq.

wasn't there a news story about two weeks ago about how scores of taliban leaders were spotted by a drone at a funeral....was it bin laden's?

how about a bit of conspiracy.....the US knew bin laden was dead, and was planning on announcing it in late oct for a bump up in public opinion before the election. even though he died of typhoid, the spin machine would somehow make it seem that the military was the real reason he was dead. by the time people started asking questions about iraq, the election would have come and gone and bush would be able to escape congressional investigations into the run-up to the war.

now with the cat out of the bag (if he is indeed dead) people are going to be asking questions for the next six weeks. perhaps the french deliberately released the info?

Yesterday BBC as well, they said they did not target it as there was no sign of Bin Laden. The photo was damn close from space. Dang.. You could not see features but your could see style of dress.

Rows of them lined up. Could also be the last two times they went for underlings they killed only civilians.

I'm sure Bush & Co will just say that "the war's not over, we still have enemies to take care of in Pakistan and Afganistan, and beyond" and keep on going like they have been. The bad guys over there are like shark teeth, one right after the other, and side-by-side.

More like 50 six-packs of Budweiser lined up in the back of a Ford F100 pickup. You know what, I don't believe in Evolution any more. Why are the unfit still fit to run governments? The fitest usually die young, long before they ever become millionaires. Everything is so fu@ked up. I'm going to get a gill job and move back to the Atlantic where I came from.
