It was interesting to see how Democrats (for the most part) voted their conscience (34 voted against the bill) and republicans voted according to party lines (zero voted for the bill- out of nearly 180 of them, you would think that at least one would have thought the bill was worthwhile- this was probably the case, but not one would cross party lines to make a statement).

This thread needs an irrelevant and ignorant political cartoon or captioned pic posted by one of three people. Until then it is just not complete.

Oh I dunno -- finally the United States is no longer alone amongst developed nations by not having comprehensive health care for its citizens. I'm pretty certain the more than 50 million uninsured Americans will be pleased, not too mention those routinely denied insurance coverage by companies more interested in profit and a bottom-line than actual health.

It seems the greedy health " care " for profit insurance industry is what is fucked.

Yes a victory for Barack the Baby Killer.

This is legislating in the face of the American People.

He just put them on the superhighway to insolvency.

    Well done Bozo jackoff

You forgot a third option AJ: Those who are not rich but already have health care, like vets.

The bill will get tweaks over the years. This bill is a Ford Pinto about to roll into Pimp My Ride.

What I'm saying is that too this point the US has been the only developed nation in the world to not offer its people comprehensive healthcare, and that is reflected in the fact that America rates poorly on global health indexes.

They have a system that costs more than any other yet delivers less.

I suggest we pay for universal health care by cutting out the military industrial complex's HUGE profits.

Here's another idea... How about cutting all the private (paid by tax payers) jets that the Goverment uses..
Next let's bring down the governments salaries to match what the rest of us make and I think here is the best option moving forward.. Lets force Obama and everyone else to use the same health care options that we have.

    Very well done Mr. President.

Stupak is assured Obama will add signing statement forbidding " National" funding for abortions,
( sorry women, your family planning needs had to be sacrificed .)

What this means is States will be able to allow funding for abortion .

Good suggestions and now we can all have health care options.

Well, private insurance companies do have a profit margin to protect.

I would be really curious to hear why Grayson's proposal to allow people to buy into Medicare at cost- no deficit expansion- would be a bad thing. We have socialized medicine in the States, not to mention a heavily subsidized healthcare industry. The problem is, it only covers about half of the population.

Yup- and how many people completely ignore this fact? A huge numbers of people are covered by Medicare/Medicaid, and doctors are happy to see those people come into their offices as they know they'll get paid.

He couldn't be happier right now- health care passing was the best thing that could have happened to him- he's going to get years of tirades out of this.

Not exactly. This bill, which is a mess, mandates that people without insurance must choose a private health care provider. This will be a windfall for the health care industry without a public option.

The CBO, based on conservative estimates, has already declared that HC reform will reduce the federal deficit over time. Most of these fiscal benefits will not flow to the bottom line until the second decade though. Important also to keep in mind that this historic legislation is just the first (albeit critical) step in HC reform- there are several more improvements that can and should be made over time. Tort reform and unravelling the big Pharma sweetheart deal spring to mind.

America has done the right thing.
