Clinton says US ready to help in Falklands dispute

Mrs Clinton met President Fernandez during her Latin American tour

The US is ready to help Britain and Argentina resolve their dispute over the Falkland Islands, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said.

Argentina claims sovereignty over the Falklands, which it calls the Malvinas.

It has been angered by the UK's decision to begin drilling for oil under a seabed off the islands.

Mrs Clinton said the row should be resolved between the two, but "if we can be of any help in facilitating such an effort, we stand ready to do so".

Ms Clinton spoke before she met Argentine President Cristina Fernandez as part of a tour of Latin America.

She is also due to visit Chile - reeling from a massive earthquake which killed more than 700 people - Brazil, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

The AP news agency reported that at the meeting, Argentina asked for US help in resolving the dispute.

"What we have requested is mediation as a friendly country of both Argentina and the United Kingdom," it quoted Ms Fernandez as saying.

After the meeting, Mrs Clinton said the US wanted to encourage dialogue but was not offering to act in a mediating role.

"We're not interested in and have no real role in determining what they decide between the two of them. But we want them talking and we want them trying to resolve the outstanding issues between them," she said.

"We recognise that there are contentious matters that have to be resolved and we hope that they will do so."

Smug, please get real. It's alright banging the drum and all that, but the Flaklands (sp mistake intended) is a tiny little plot of isle off a fekkin huge country called Argentina. Geographically we're taking the piss!

Granted, Blighty's done the ground work and IF the hunt is beneficial, then why not cut the Argies in, say 10% for doing fuk all. Going to create a harmonious environment, innit?

It's analogous with Thaksin profiteering to the tune of 76 billion bhat without paying a satang in tax......GREED!

Is one allowed to point out the the Falkland Islands are further away from Argentina than Argentina is wide! So it is not really that close.

The Frogs and the Spanish also had settlements on the Falkland Islands at one time (I believe the Frogs actually built the first) so perhaps they'll be putting in a claim too...

ta for acknowledging my point but it's in Argentinian water. Gib is a rock 'right fekkin there' off the mainland, not far far away. There's even a runway built between the rock and the mainland....different kettle of fish that.

Oops. Without checking, I don't think that is correct. The New territories were rented, as you say for 99 years. Hong Kong (and Kowloon?) were actually ceded to the UK in perputuity.

UK owned Kowloon and New Territories but not HK.
