^ Not sure about everywhere.
In Australia, I usually only watch the non-commericial news.
We have 2 fairly decent 'government' funded TV networks, the ABC and SBS.
The ABC continuously wins most of the Journalism Awards as they buck the trend and actually retain Journalists who investigate.
There seems to be a trend towards 'Newstainment' where viewers want to be entertained by their news, rather then informed.
What does concern me is that many, usually a younger demographic, get their news from Social Media.
About 6-in-10 Americans get news from social media
A majority of U.S. adults – 62% – get news on social media, and 18% do so often, according to a new survey by Pew Research Center, conducted in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In 2012, based on a slightly different question, 49% of U.S. adults reported seeing news on social media.
Sadly we used to have a program called 'Fact Checker' where the validity of a Politicians sound byte could be verified or vilified without fear or favour ... but it got axed due to 'Budget Cuts'.
Back to the Us, given the size of the place, surely there must be some news broadcaster who you can trust for a genuine independent viewpoint?
