SADDAM Hussein and seven co-defendants went on hunger strike after their THIRD defence lawyer was kidnapped and killed yesterday.
The deposed Iraqi tyrant is demanding international protection for his defence team.
The body of Khamis al-Obaidi was found dumped in a Baghdad street, police said.
He said late last year that, unlike most of the defence team, he preferred to stay in Iraq during court recesses.
He added: “Whatever will be will be.”
His death was a fresh blow to the US-backed court, which has also been marred by the resignation of the previous chief judge and complaints from human rights groups that Saddam cannot get a fair trial.
The killing came two days after the chief prosecutor demanded the death penalty for Saddam for crimes against humanity.
UP to 30 insurgents ambushed two US soldiers who were abducted and slaughtered south of Baghdad, it was claimed yesterday. The men’s bodies were found on Monday.
