    moderating issues

OK, since people seem a bit shy or whatever, let me invite comments and criticism about moderating in here.

Constructive suggestions in particular are invited.
What can be improved, what are you dissatisfied with?

Following the recent comments elsewhere, I wonder, should mods be more of a role-model when commenting themselves, i.e. more quality posts rather than off-hand comments etc.?

Should the line between what's ok as an occasional off-topic/funny sort of comment, and what isn't, be clearer?

If the mods are known then of course they have to be more of a role model, people will follow that lead.

Maybe you should have a seperate mod nic.

Then people know when you are being a mod rather than just the normal dick head.

    Sorry, just couldn't resist.

In an ideal world, moderators would not even participate in the threads they moderate. The problem of the other forum is that the moderators tend to delete or ban posters they do not agree with. I'd hate to see the same thing happen here....

Mods are mods named or not. Things is in this part of the forum mods damn near out-numnber the regular postsers! if a mod is in a discussion with someone else they should refrain from moderating any of the related posts. Should any of the posts need moderating you got enough folks to come along and pick up the shortfall.
I post in here only rarely, even though there are many subjects that interest me; simply because I find the "moderation" policies a bit OTT. I also see moderation going on when the one doing the moderating is invloved. While it may or not be the case there is an appearance of an uneven moderation policy.
be perfectly honest with you; the old adage, "All things in moderation, 'specially moderation" holds a very real truth to it. I find the ubiquitous presence of moderators to be just to much. If moderation isn't practically transparent then it isn't being practiced with enough care.

    Good points so far.

We have an agreement now not to moderate when we express opinions of our own on a topic and are in conflict with a poster - a mistake was made before.

Moderation is transparent in as far that posters are notified if posts are deleted or edited, and we will answer queries via pm or in public.

There would be a list of who is suspended, it isn't here because noone got suspended.

I've had posts deleted that were pointless, inoffensive, off topic and (maybe) slightly humorous.

I can't remember what they were, but I made them just to lighten the air, it's not always fun talking about serious subjects.

I can understnad deleting offensive posts, but as far as I remember mine were not - seems a bit harsh.

If a similar policy were used across the TD there would only be 15 posts left - all made by William.

I sometimes let it stand, but if all 'funny' posts are left, Issues would look like the rest of TD soon...

NickA , the policy is for Issues which is a serious discussion forum, ie "Serious Discussion", posts of GW Bush is a wanker is not serious discussion, well ok it is but it has been posted many times before, but this place is for the serious stuff.

There are more than enough non serious places on this forum to post your drivel NickA

Ah, but that would mean I have to check which part of the forum I'm in everytime I make a post.

    Sounds difficult!

This post is not serious, please delete it.

Even better, please delete NickA, that would make your life easier.

Don't thank me for this advice, I live to serve.

    Sir.

I just deleted one of nick's posts.

However, his above comment is valid, it happens quite a bit that members are not aware they're posting in "Issues".

    Stroller:

Do you not feel that "issues" have discussed the issue of whether or not you moderate the forum correctly one too many times?

You have rules, you have moderators. If he rules are being obeyed - which I hope they are - that only leaves one place where the problem can lay.

Without wishing to over simplify the problem: are you sure you have control over your moderators?

On the other hand, if posters are not complying with your affixed rules - tell them to shut the fuck up and stick to the rules!

It's not as clear-cut as that.

Rules are not kept to, and there is a grey area.
Some mods are more experienced than others, we're learning from mistakes.

Feedback is welcome, and this is the only thread in "Issues" asking for constuctive criticism.

I think the topic will die when everything has been said and taken on board.

Anyway, mod issues are a 'hobby' of mine, since I've been on the wrong end of the stick a fair bit myself.
I'd be very happy if we succeed to do a better job here.

I just deleted some posts and moved the relevant ones between Macha and Marmite to the Cap's Lounge.

Jesus H. Christ what the hell do you think you have here? This is an "Issues" sub forum on one of the most easy-going, fun-loving forums I have ever seen. yes it is an issues forum and this is for duiscussion of "issues" that affect many of us. That doesn't mean conversations can't digress, doesn't mean that there can't be a little bit of fun, doesn't mean that you are a completely separate entity. NickA's Post was funny AND germain; simply a funny reply to other's comments. Deleting it was chickenshit and seriously OTT in my opinion. LIGHTEN THE FUCK UP!

This is exactly the type of Bullshit that keeps me out of "Issues." Get a grip, stop being such a school marm. Let the folks here enjoy their discussions. This is not a business meeting; this is not a school report or a UN discussion. Teak Door's a Forum where mostly mis-fits and malcontents post. Discussions digress, jokes are made; some not always funny some in bad taste.

It is the "serious" part of the forum indeed. But fuck me, it ain't the fuckin' Nuremberg Trails for chrissake. I say again, lighten up.

    I dislike Frankie often.
He has a nack of being able to say what I think so much better than me.

Even his spelling is improving.. bastard.

I only have issue with moderators who are so transparent in their display of double standards.

** Check it out ... I'm a bit of a compulsive and love posting in the forum. But I still know it's a colossal waste of time.

How the fuck don't people know they are posting in different forums?

    I don't get it?

You just look at the top of the page and see where you are.

Bloody lazy if you ask me.

hey stroller ... got something for you. Go to your moderator boss and tell him:

"The real essence of empowerment comes from releasing the knowledge, experience, and motivational power that is already in people but is often severely underutilzed"

So, "Is you is or is you ain't empowered??
