    Pentagon quietly changes 'deter war'

mission statement to one that protects America's influence with 'lethal force'
The change occurred sometime this year and was altered to exclude the directive to “deter war”

The Department of Defense under President Donald Trump has quietly changed its public mission statement, altering a decades-old stated goal.

The change occurred sometime this year, according to a column in the veterans-focused news outlet Task & Purpose, and was altered to exclude the directive to “deter war”, while adding a goal to “sustain American influence abroad”.

“The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country,” the previous mission statement read.

Now, the website defines its mission as follows: “The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide a lethal Joint Force to defend the security of our country and sustain American influence abroad”.

Task & Purpose notes that the Pentagon had maintained the previous mission statement through several presidential administrations, including during the tenures of Presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton.

The Department of Defense would not have had mission statements published online prior to Mr Clinton’s presidency.

FFS. It's a mission statement. Everyone knows mission statements are full of shite.
Its like companies who write" Our mission is to bring the best value and service to our customers whilst ensuring that we operate at the highest ethical standards and bring value to our shareholders".
Translated into what they really mean:
"We hope you believe this shite so that we can squeeze every penny possible out of you and we dont really give a fook how we do it as long as it keeps the owners quiet and the CEO gets his bonus".

The extended empire remains solidly perpetual....
And the American population still doesn't get it.

No Hugh, it's a lot more than hollow words. The mission statement is a guideline that generals and admirals can fall back on whenever they do use lethal force.
    It's quite disturbing.

Nothing will change. Americans will act in whatever way they deem necessary to preserve their own interests. As does every other country. One only has to look at Iraq or Guantanamo Bay to see how flimsy the evidence can be when an excuse to do whatever they like is needed. In short if there is no evidence to justify action, just manufacture some. A mission statement is window dressing nothing more. How many totalitarian regimes have a constitution that they either partially or totally ignore. Or something closer to home called the Rainbow warrior. The froggies not only attacked and sank a vessel in a friendly countries harbour but they right royally rogered the Kiwis after the incident out of some form of justice after the Kiwis capitulated to trade threats.

I take all of what you're saying and agree to a large extent. However, why change the wording from "deter war" which has a noble-sounding ring to it albeit it could (and was?) used to do lots of violence against foreign nationals on their home turf, and replace those words with "use lethal force"?
There was no need to change the wording. There's something else afoot. It may be a subtle threat to perceived enemies in a scenario where war is not imminent and thus deterring war is not a good excuse to invade.

Have you forgotten who's in charge of the hen house? One would not exactly call him a wordsmith.

Hehe, of course not. But insofar as he is or is not completely in charge, I doubt very much he writes anything except tweets with poor grammar and spelling. Stuff like this "mission statement" is written by underlings, of course.
But it's written on his watch, and IMHO was changed for a reason, and a reason that could be disturbing.

Was wondering if anyone could remember a time when the Pentagon had ever 'detered war' doesnt seem to be many or any even.

Perhaps if they didnt follow the previous mission statement they wont pursue the new one of 'using lethal force'....Yea right.

But seriously; perhaps it is to pave the way for the use of nukes, very difficult to claim that a nuke bomb will 'deter war'.

There are certain exceptions for an "exceptional" state. Similarly, as remarked in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655 - (should we believe it?)

George H. W. Bush, the vice president of the United States at the time commented on a separate occasion, speaking to a group of Republican ethnic leaders (7 Aug 1988) said: "I will never apologize for the United States — I don't care what the facts are... I'm not an apologize-for-America kind of guy."
    (Today 30 years ago):
On 3 July 1988, Iran Air Flight 655, a scheduled civilian passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai, was shot down by an SM-2MR surface-to-air missile fired from USS Vincennes, a guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. The aircraft, an Airbus A300, was destroyed and all 290 people on board including 66 children were killed.
