The Worst Fish in America: Asian Carpocalypse

VICE News correspondent Thomas Morton investigates Asian carp — a slimy, ugly, and often gargantuan species of fish that has taken over many waterways in the United States.

First introduced in the US in the 1960s to control weeds and parasites at aquatic farms in Arkansas, the bottom feeders eventually escaped and made their way through the Mississippi River system, eating almost everything in their path and severely damaging ecosystems across the Midwest.

Today, government officials are concerned that the fish will invade the Great Lakes, destroy more ecosystems, wreak havoc on the region's multibillion dollar fishing industry, and spread to almost every major waterway in the Northeast.

VICE News traveled across Illinois to see how people are dealing with the Asian carp invasion, visiting the Redneck Fishing Tournament — where the sole mission is to catch as many carp as possible — touring a processing plant trying to monetize the fish, and then heading to Chicago, where we learned that Asian carp are a symptom of a much larger issue.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

It's the same thing going on all around the world : new species being spread either accidentally or idiotically. Though thank god the problem of discharged ballast water in ships is finally starting to be addressed.

Unfortunately I think that the only way this kind of problem may be solved is the introduction of viruses specifically engineered genetically to attack specific species. And hopefully they are tested very well.

The Australian government allocated A$15m in the 2016 budget to a national carp control plan, centred around a plan to release the koi herpes virus into the Murray-Darling river system to kill common carp, or Cyprinus carpio.

This is a very good clip of how the introduction (or reintroduction after 70 years absence) of a species has amazing (positive) effects on the ecosystem and nature.

Have all the impacts been truly positive? No objections by some environmentalist?

A whole bunch of Vietnamese who live in the USA eat plenty of carp. Carp is pretty good eating. It has a bad reputation with many Americans because they don't care well for them.

The other invasive species are, Northern Pike and Giant Snakehead.

Americans need to learn not to be such freaking crybabies!

Been around our lakes forever...Norton has the answer...Eat them...Seems only the Asians here really appreciate them...

Used to catch them all the time as a kid...Because they were big bastards...

Some smart fooker will find an idea to market them...Had a forestry friend who thought of using their skins for leather products...

Actually, you can google that and find a company that will sell you a "pelt" for $7.50...
