Did 10 years in the USN as a noncitizen. 5 tours on river patrol boats in VN. Got citizenship after I left.

More like Cheech, Chong, Denzel and Will Smith. About same now as 50+ years ago.

I was thinking they could fill their shortfall with Spanish speaking Christians from the Americas. But again maybe that happens already.

A mate of mine commented that when the "fleet" arrives in Pattaya for R&R the guys disembarking already don't all look like Alan Ladd!
Non-US citizens serving in the US military can apply for expedited citizenship. You must be a green card holder to enlist. When I was in Vietnam, they would periodically load foreign-born troops on the "Beaner Express", fly them to Guam. swear them in as citizens, give them a beer or two, and fly them back to the rice paddies.

The Trump administration's ambitious new military buildup is at risk of being hobbled before it even starts — by a dwindling pool of young Americans who are fit to serve.

Nearly three-quarters of Americans age 17 to 24 are ineligible for the military due to obesity, other health problems, criminal backgrounds or lack of education, according to government data.
I am going out on a limb here but the term"American" is such a loose term nowadays. There is this view that all Americans are white, corn fed, good ol country boys but in fact that segment of "America" changed eons ago. What is present now is a huge number of immigrants from a multitude of countries and not all have been stellar healthy citizens. In fact many move to the US and bring over their children for the health care etc etc . In California for example, a vast majority of the Mexicans and Chinese young adults are fat, lazy and sit in front of tablets playing video games but they are "Americans"

So I say YES...by Citizen stats it is a true statement but come on, lets be honest, how many of them would protect the US in the event of a war? Most with dual citizenship or are illegal aliens would pack up and leave. I want to be clear I am not saying that all Caucasian citizens are lean thin fighting machines, in fact obesity in the US is at a disgusting level. Fatness and poor health has become acceptable.

^Point taken, but a huge number of Japanese/Americans fought with incredible valor in WW2, even as their families languished in internment camps. As did German/Americans, Italian/Americans, and many others.

Norts. How long was a Vietnam tour for the Navy. Army was 12 months...Jarheads 13. I never knew any Navy types that served in country other than two guys from SEAL Team 1, and I think/think they said their tour was 6 months.

Did you also do the firearms training? If so, which of those two groups had the better aim right out of the gate?

Can't really say by group. It was an individual thing. As a very general statement, those who had no firearms experience were easier to train, as you didn't have to break them of bad habits.

Agreed DK. Its hard not to come across biased or racist but it is what the perception is. My GPA died in WW2 (Marine). I lost an uncle in the Vietnam war (Helo Pilot).

6 months. 6 months in country. 6 out. During the out was an instructor at survival school in the PI and/or a riverine trainer in US.

Quite a few. All "brown water" navy guys. PBRs, Swift boats and LSTs. I was on PBR up in I Corp. Same area you were pounding the ground in I believe.

Yeah, I spent most of my tour in I Corp. I knew there were a lot of Navy guys in-country, just never crossed paths with any. The two SEAL Team 1 guys I knew I met after the war.

All good Norts. My family was Military for most part. Gps. uncle, bother (Marine Recon). I never enlisted but worked for companies building HUDs for F16 and F18 planes and later RF switches for Tomahawk and Patriot missle systems. I later became a Marksmen using a 50 cal.
