    Syrian "rebels" having missiles?

Russia must find out where Syrian militants got MANPADS that downed Su-25 – MPs
    Published time: 4 Feb, 2018

Russian lawmakers have called for a thorough investigation on the origins of the man-portable missile launcher that was likely used by militants in Syria to shoot down a Russian fighter jet before killing the pilot in a firefight.

"Certainly, we will investigate, including a great many things: from the type of the MANPADS [man-portable air defense system] to the circumstances of the Su-25 downing," Frants Klintsevich, First Deputy chair of Russia's Federal Council Defense Committee, told Interfax.

He hopes that evidence will be available due to the "abundance of UAVs and space surveillance in the area."

As far as military losses go, "the loss of one aircraft is nothing, but politically it has great significance and far-reaching consequences," Klintsevich said. Other lawmakers are concerned about how the militants could have acquired the anti-aircraft weapon. "We have information that the MANPADS used to bring down our jet was brought into Syria from a neighboring country several days ago," MP Dmitry Sablin, coordinator of the Russia-Syria parliamentary friendship group, told Interfax. "Countries from whose territory weapons arrive, that are then used against Russian servicemen, must understand that whis will not go unpunished," he added.

Deputy Head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Yury Shvytkin, told RIA he is inclined to believe that the "MANPADS' origins are linked with Western countries."

A Pentagon spokesperson, interviewed by TASS, has already denied the US sent anti-aircraft weapons to Syria. However, the 2017 defense spending bill, signed under Barack Obama, opened the door for the supply of such weapons to Syrian rebels – a fact that Moscow sounded the alarm over when the bill was inked.

However, it envisages careful vetting of the recipients and extensive paperwork, and the Pentagon has previously said that no such deliveries have actually been made.

In mid-January, a report by the Syrian online outlet Al-Masdar claimed Kurdish forces operating in Syria had received a shipment of MANPADS from the US in an "independent secret deal." The report cited unnamed "opposition sources."

No anti-aircraft weapons sent to 'our' Syrian rebels – Pentagon after downing of Russian jet
    Published time: 4 Feb, 2018

The US military has said no anti-aircraft weapons have been shipped to the militias it backs in Syria amid speculation the Russian Su-25 jet downed in Idlib, north-west Syria may have been shot down by a US-made missile.

“The United States have not provided any of its allied forces in Syria with anti-aircraft weapons,” Pentagon spokesman Maj. Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway told TASS. He said the US-led coalition is currently not engaged in any operations in the area where the jet was downed Saturday. He added that the coalition's combat efforts are “geographically orientated on the current fight with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) in eastern Syria.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier the jet was attacked from the ground by rebels possibly using a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) in the designated ceasefire zone in Idlib province. The Pentagon will study “the veracity of the statements” put forward by the Russian military to ensure security of its coalition allies, Rankine-Galloway added.

Some Russian legislators and experts interviewed by local media voiced concerns that the weapons may have its origins in the West and then smuggled through a neighboring country to Syria. The deputies urged a thorough investigation to trace the air defense system's origin.

The pilot, identified in some reports as Major Roman Filippov, ejected from the stricken aircraft and parachuted to the ground. It's believed the officer was engaged in a firefight with militants before being killed. Purported images of his personal belongings, including his gun and a recommendation for a state honor, have surfaced on social media. As did footage of militants shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) at the sight of the jet crashing and militants taking selfies with the body of the slain pilot.

The US has repeatedly denied it had shipped portable air defense missile systems to the rebels, brushing off Moscow’s concerns in the process. The 2017 National Defense Authorization Act enabled the Pentagon to authorize shipments of anti-aircraft weapons to Syrian rebels for it to be used “against aircraft of one side only.”

The Russian Defense Ministry argued that if such weapons are brought into Syria, they could easily fall into the hands of IS and other terrorists.

The Pentagon then denied it had any plans to send the weapons.

The 2018 defense act outlines significant directives pertaining to MANPADS deployment in Syria. Section 1227 of the bill states that in order to provide air-defense systems to the “vetted Syrian opposition,” the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State must first inform the congressional committee; describe in detail the location of the group; its intelligence assessment; the number of devices to be shipped; as well as an “explanation of the purpose and expected employment” of the defense systems.

Well understood, except for those who are faithful and apologists for the Anglo-American empires.

Even from the title I had a feeling that this would involve the Kurds, and now that feeling is that the US is going to blame the Kurds. How convenient .
Kurds have nothing to do with it, it's like a replay of when the USA supplied Stingers GTA missiles to Bin Laden in Afghanistan .

They can't even keep track of what's happening here at home. They probably have no clue if Syrian "rebels" have some of our hardware.

Quite cynical, but to be fair can't think of any other realistic scenario.

Realistic, as such a scenario has consistent history on it's side.

SU-25 is Russian eqivalent of A-10. So relatively low and slow. It could have been a lucky hit from a Toyota mounted heavy machine gun. I feel for the pilot. One minute happy and comfortable next minute you have to decide to take one or two with you.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

IF you watched House of Saud, you will have observed that Saudi went to third party countries like Bulgaria to buy arms to ship to the rebels.

I would imagine America and Russia are not the only countries in the world that sell SAMs.

Anyway good shot lads. Bit of payback.

    It's Saudi's fault, it's the West's fault.

Is then even evidence yet that it was shot down by a missile?
Or a type of missile? US? Russian? Chinese?

People keen to assign blame before the facts are even in.

Saudi Arabia has been looking for ways to increase its involvement in Syria with plans ranging from a full-on ground war to just sending jets to Turkey. As Russia escalates it bombardment of groups fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Saudi Foreign Minister floated the idea of arming rebels with shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, which is a strategy we’ve seen used against the Russian Air Force in the past—to great effect.

So in Syria we now have the local government, the rebels, the Kurds, the Ruskies, the Americans and NATO friends, the Israelis, the Iranians, the Turks, ISIL, and now the Sauds.

    Did I forget anyone?

Don't be silly, the seppos have no control over the Saudis. It's the Saudis keeping the oil price up and fuck knows seppoland needs it.

The reason they are going their own way is that Obama wouldn't suck up to them like Bush did.
