    The Coming War on China
Journalist John Pilger on how the world's greatest military power, the US, may well be on the road to war with China.
    06 Dec 2017

A major United States military build-up is under way in Asia and the Pacific with the purpose of confronting China, according to award-winning journalist John Pilger. Nuclear war is no longer unthinkable.

In his film, The Coming War on China, Pilger warns that the world's greatest military power, the US, and the world's second economic power, China, may well be on the road to war.

China has been building airstrips in the South China Sea in the disputed Spratly Islands archipelago, creating a flashpoint for war with the US.

The rise of China is viewed in Washington as a threat to American dominance. To counter this, President Barack Obama announced a "pivot to Asia", meaning that almost two-thirds of all US naval forces would be transferred to Asia and the Pacific, their weapons aimed at China.

"If you stood on the tallest building in Beijing and looked out on the Pacific Ocean, you'd see American warships, you'd see Guam is about to sink because there are so many missiles pointed at China. You'd look up at Korea and see American armaments pointing at China, you'd see Japan which is basically a glove over the American fist," says James Bradley, author of The China Mirage.

The interview - with a full audience - has been repeated at Al Jazeera (e.g. just now), quite interesting to hear it.

Beatrice Fihn (born 1982 in Göteborg) is a Swedish jurist, Since July 1, 2014 she is the Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.[1]

Fihn studied at University of Stockholm, receiving a bachelor's degree in international relations in 2008. In 2009, she participated in an internship at the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), and was involved in the work of the Conference on Disarmament and the United Nations Human Rights Council. She then worked at a bank in Geneva and earned a Master of Laws degree in International Law at the University College London.[2]

Fihn criticized U.S. President Donald Trump on his nuclear policies, calling him as a moron,[3] while not criticizing other leaders of countries with nuclear weapons, including Emmanuel Macron (France), Theresa May (United Kingdom), Vladimir Putin (Russia), Xi Jinping (China) and Narendra Modi (India).

Fihn returned to the WILPF in 2010, working with it's 'Reaching Critical Will' disarmament programme,[4] until becoming the Executive Director of ICAN in 2014

I've been a member of ICAN but so is Henry Kissinger, don't expect any progress soon

Rather than nonproliferation we have state's some so called democraciies that won't sign treaties or allow inspection, I used attend conferences at Harwell and have not changed my opinion that until fusion achived via the Tokamak there is no safe level.

Nuclear was bad enough when US murdered most of Japans Catholics one day.
Just wait until Iran or Pakistan feel cornered.

It is a failure of UN that the big players on the security council prevented leak,The French are notorious and their tehcnology is whored out.

Mordechai Vanunu showed what Israelis were up to and got hammered.

Add to this the non state actor dirty bomb.

We have the US to thank for opening the Pandoras box and Fuchs who sold their secrets to the Russians

In January 1950, Fuchs confessed that he was a spy. He was
sentenced to fourteen years' imprisonment and stripped of his British citizenship. He was released in 1959, after serving nine years, and emigrated to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), where he was elected to the Academy of Sciences and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) central committee. He was later appointed deputy director of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Rossendorf, where he served until he retired in 1979.

Al Jazeera is a very unrelaible source for anything related to Qatar, and is merely a vanity project for teh wealthy Al-Thani dictators

And the one about who they bribed their way to the World Cup.

And the one about how they harbour and fund terrorist groups.

And the one about how they paid Al Qaeda $1 Billion because one of their family members was dumb enough to go hunting in Iraq and get kidnapped.

The list goes on but the forum idiot cherry picks the ones he thinks mean something.

^Does it (non-existing documentary on imported labor in Qatari, corruption etc.) exonerate the atrocities exercised on the NK people?

Wow ! It seems though that it was only half a billion, and it was for 24 Qataris and two Saudis. And I think the money was confiscated :

    Depends who you believe innit.

Around $700m was paid both to Iranian figures and the regional Shia militias they support, according to regional government officials. They added that $200m to $300m went to Islamist groups in Syria, most of that to Tahrir al-Sham, a group with links to al-Qaeda.

    The Oligarchs

Al Jazeera’s investigative unit exposed the trade in court-frozen assets allegedly stolen by ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, overthrown by the EuroMaidan Revolution on Feb. 22, 2014. The investigation reveals connections among Russian oligarchs, including Pavel Fuchs, and exiled Ukrainian ones, such as Serhiy Kurchenko, now in exile in Moscow, and ex-member of the Ukrainian parliament, Alexander Onyschenko, in trading in frozen assets in the hopes of getting Ukrainian courts to unfreeze the money, $1.5 billion out of an estimated $40 billion stolen during Yanukovych’s rule between 2010-2014.

Heart of Darkness: Return to the My Lai massacre
A Vietnam War vet returns for the first time to meet survivors of the My Lai massacre and set the record straight.

    https://www.aljazeera.com/programmes...124536614.html

Ten years ago, Al Jazeera Fault Lines host Josh Rushing travelled to Vietnam with a former US soldier who had taken part in the worst civilian massacre by US forces during the Vietnam War. They revisited the site of the My Lai massacre and met some of the few villagers who survived.

Pham Thi Tuan lay motionless among dead bodies for hours in a ditch that she and her baby daughter had been herded into, along with more than 100 other people. It was only her father's corpse that prevented her from being killed on March 16, 1968, in what became known as the My Lai massacre.

At 75, Pham was one of the few remaining survivors of the atrocities that saw US soldiers from Charlie Company fly chopper by chopper into the tiny hamlet in central Vietnam, and spend the next four days killing and maiming up to 500 innocent, unarmed Vietnamese, many of whom were women and children.

Pham Thanh Cong has dedicated his life to making sure the massacre remains in the public conscience. He was 11 at the time of the attacks, and still bears a mark from a bullet that nearly killed him. He is now in charge of the museum dedicated to the victims of the massacre, and the caretaker of what remains of the small village where they lived.

No member of Charlie Company has returned to the scene of the massacre before, but, 40 years after being charged with killing nine Vietnamese villagers, veteran Ken Schiel was persuaded by Rushing to return to the scene of the war crime and meet survivors.

Schiel, like many US soldiers in Vietnam, was only 19 years old at the time, and has trouble recognising the village when he returns.

"I was a soldier following orders. And I believe that's how I dealt with that then. And that's how I deal with it today," Schiel said, while touring the museum. "Did I shoot? I'll say that I shot until I realised what was wrong ... I'm not going to say whether I shot villagers or not."

When Schiel met Cong, the survivor who runs the museum, neither man was aware of the other's past.

"I was part of the Americans that landed here in the helicopters. And I want to apologise to the people of My Lai," Schiel said.

"I ask myself all the time, 'Why did this happen?' I don't know. A sad feeling and an angry feeling are rising up in my heart. The US soldiers killed my mother, my older sister, and my younger brother," Cong replies.

Now, 10 years on, John Rushing, himself a veteran of 15 years in the US Marine Corps, talks to REWIND about the emotional effect of making Heart of Darkness and how many of those who have fought in war ultimately come to recognise its futility.

Read more about John Rushing's experience of making the film here.
