George Orwell - 22nd October 1948“…I have not definitely decided on the title. I am inclined to call it either NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR or THE LAST MAN IN EUROPE, but I might just possibly think of something else in the next week or two.”
But yes, the year doesn't matter.
IMO PC does kill comedy. Jokes are made about everything. In Oz we make jokes about Tasmanians being inbred. In Sydney they make jokes about "westies" in the poorer western suburbs. We make Irish and "pommie jokes" Are they racist? Yes. We make jokes about people with one leg or.... Q: Whats the smallest pub in England? A: The Thalidomide Arms. Some will laugh some will give you a 1 hour PC lecture about disability. Much humour is based on OTHER peoples misfortune. We laugh because we are relieved it happened to somebody else and not us. Not because we are better than them. We all have our own concept of what is humour. My ex wife use to be reduced to tears by the goodies. I personally did not find them in the least humourous. The beauty of humour is it takes no prisoners. Political correctness has made everyone look for the hidden agenda or ulterior motive of racism/antigay/sexism that must be lurking within the deliverer. We are losing the ability to laugh at ourselves and each other in the name of "lets not upset anyone" especially any perceived minority.
I saw a news report on Brazil where they are trying to make a version of soccer that is more inclusive for girls to play against boys and where everyone is assured of getting a kick. The PC brigade make a virtue of mediocrity.
A Trump supporting comedian who effortlessly smacks down that lot would be good though.
But fuck, he'd have to be one superhuman talent.
Dunno if you've failed to notice Nemo, but comedy with a political slant is very rarely in endorsement of a ruling party.
And with the thighslappers Trump supplies on an hourly basis...
It's no coincidence that the majority of comedians tend left / liberal I think.
There are 'conservative comics' of course but it's kinda hard to be amusing when you're just angry and ranting. That Dennis Miller guy comes to mind, he just comes across as mean-spirited.
It's partly what made Colbert's right-wing blowhard character on the 'Colbert Report' so funny - better than him as a 'straight' host also in my opinion - because he played to that but without the actual anger.
Anyway it's a lot of fuckery about nothing. Don't like it / someone / a certain show don't watch it. Simples.
Chubby 'ranting'
Bill Burr has another point of view on Arnold. Not that hilarious, IMO, but an interesting take..
