Or is it that Drumpftards are only concerned with free speech when it's their angry, shouty voices?

    Neo-nazis: But, but free speech!
NFL players: Boo! Hiss! Fire their entitled, uppity, black arses!

I find the kerfluffe about the national anthem confusing. Since I was in grammar school, and that was a long time ago, kids who were Jehova Witnesses were excused from rising for the national anthem in the classroom or sports match. A federal ruling said it was unconstitutional to force someone to stand. Athletes have protested like this in the Olympic since the 60's. Why in the hell are Trumpkins so upset about this now?

Seems America is doing a slide back in time.

    No keruffle. It's just dumb.

Same as if it was Ben Affleck or Beyoncé refusing to stand.

They should check their celebrity privilege or whatever.

Good question. For all his blather Trump's guilty of disrespecting the flag/military himself.

All this flag-waving crap is kinda gauche anyway.

Why do you hate freedom of speech, Comrade?? Funny how you don't apply the same standard to longway, eh.

Thankfully for me I come from a free and democratic country where expressing ones opinion on all matter of topics is permissible. Even on a Thai-centric Internet forum.

What? I don't understand what you mean. If Ben Affleck, Beyonce or football players don't want to stand, so what. They are just people. They have rights like everyone else.

Just means it’s focused on Thailand (or is supposed to be or something, I don’t really know )

Was just using that to highlight the ludicrousness of Slick saying I can’t / shouldn’t comment on a U.S. issue even though we’re both posting on a forum that’s based on Thailand and geared toward expats.

LOL I'm not saying it should be illegal, or that they shouldn't have that right. Or that they should be arrested.

Im simply saying it's dumb, an a little insulting, that these privelaged people - reaping the entire benefits package of the literal American Dream - are refusing to stand for the anthem of the country that has provided them such luxury.

Maybe they find it dumb and insulting that you reduce them and what they do as simply being their to entertain you, should be seen and not heard, and that they're actually reaping the rewards of their own talents, hard work and dedication.

A great essay this morning from the blogger named Kber.

Why do players take a knee?

My son plays football and I've observed two situations in which football players take a knee.

In one, the coach gathers the players around to listen to him, usually after the game. He's got something to say about the game they just played and he wants their respectful attention. Win or lose, it's a moment of reflection, rather than celebration. It re-centers the players on what's important - teamwork, sportsmanship, their best efforts.

The other time players take a knee is when you have a player down on the field. It doesn't matter if the player is from your team or the one of other guys. It doesn't matter whose fault the injury was or if the play in which the injury occurred was good for your team or not.

Everything stops. The clock, the activity on the field, talking and trash talking. The players go silent and go to a knee, waiting respectively and anxiously, hoping the injured person can walk off under his own power. Hoping he will be ok.

In either case, act of taking a knee says "pay attention- there is something more important than the game gong on here".

The NFL and other players have this ethic ingrained in them since childhood. They know the respect, anxieties, hope, and reflection inherent in that act.

I wish other people understood as well.

Yes, that's OK. I was just thinking that "expressing one's opinion on all matter of topics is permissible" does not always come true.

OK ... playing the question 'with a straight bat'

'Thai-centric' means a Forum who's basic premise for existence / reason why we come together as a group is because we have a common Thai experience.

In the same sort of way, if I owned/have an interest in VW cars, I'd join a VW Forum and not one for GM or Ford.

I'm here because I lived in Thailand, off and on for a decade, have a Thai Partner and two dual citizen Thai Kids as a result.

By the way, the Electoral College was set up so that wise and educated men could stop a populist megalomaniac from getting elected by making false promises to the electorate.

Since it's quite obviously not doing it's fucking job, it might as well be abolished.

That is correct. The electors have now just become a rubber stamp who no longer cast there votes according to personal opinion. The founders would never approve of what it has become.

Exactly it is not being utilized the way the founders intended it to be used.

    indeed, a good argument

but again democracy is also about equal choice for choosing your leader, and the collegial system does that. If American electors want to elect a complete moron, why stop them ? they would pay for it one way or another for their bad choice, but at least it's an equal choice for all and it's a fair choice for all, that's all that matters

the leader being a complete idiot, like GW Bush for example, is irrelevant

Black folk, women, and any ignoramus who can poke a hole in a ballot voting they must be rolling over in their graves. Back in the day about the only folk allowed to vote were white male landowners. Not at all what the founding fathers had in mind.
