^ Whoa...that's close to a former home...albeit a temporary one. I used to live in Torrance when I worked in LA, about 2 blocks away from this incident.

(What I didn't know until today was that the KKK supported Prohibition, and did a lot of their own extra-judicial enforcement.....).

Laquan Mcdonald: Officer jailed for shooting teen 16 times

A white police officer who shot a black teenager 16 times in 2014 has been jailed for nearly seven years for his murder.

Jason Van Dyke was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison on Friday after being convicted in October of second-degree murderand 16 counts of aggravated battery - one for each bullet fired at Laquan McDonald in Chicago.

The case has fuelled debates about race and policing and its "code of silence", and sparked large street demonstrations after video of the incident emerged 13 months later, only because a judge demanded its release.

Footage showed Van Dyke opening fire within seconds of getting out of his police car and continuing to shoot the 17-year-old as he lay in the street.

The teen, who was carrying a small knife, can be seen collapsing in a heap after the first few shots, and bullets kept hitting his body for 10 more seconds.

Van Dyke, who was responding to a report of a male breaking into trucks and stealing radios in Chicago's South Side, did not react when his sentence was read out.

Moments before, he acknowledged Laquan's death and told the judge: "As a God-fearing man and father, I will have to live with this the rest of my life."

He is the first Chicago officer to be found guilty of an on-duty shooting in half a century.

However, his sentence was less than half the time prosecutors had wanted, after they asked for 18 to 20 years by making the 16 aggravated battery charges the main sentence - instead the judge agreed the second-degree murder charge was the main offence.

The prison term is also much lower than if Van Dyke had been convicted of first-degree murder, which carries a minimum of 45 years in prison.

Lawyers on both sides agreed that if he behaves in prison the officer could be released in less than three and a half years.

His lawyers said Van Dyke "truly felt great" after the sentencing.

Laquan's great uncle said the sentence reduced his life to "a second-class citizen" and "suggests to us that there are no laws on the books for a black man that a white man is bound to honour".

Although the issue of race constantly overshadowed the case, it was only raised a few times during the trial.

One of the few mentions was at the beginning when special prosecutor Joseph McMahon said Van Dyke saw "a black boy walking down the street" who had "the audacity to ignore the police". Several black motorists testified that the officer had used a racial slur and excessive force during traffic stops in the years before the shooting.

Vidale Joy said Van Dyke used the slur after pulling him over in 2005 and put a gun to his head. He said Van Dyke "looked infuriated" and seemed "out of his mind".

Another man, Ed Nance, became emotional as he looked at Van Dyke and told how during a 2007 traffic stop the officer swore and slammed him on the car's bonnet, grabbed him by the arm and dragged him to his police car.

Relatives of the officer tried to defend and humanise him, saying he is a good father and not racist.

At the sentencing Laquan's uncle read a letter written from his nephew's perspective. "I am a 17-year-old boy, and I am a victim of murder," Marvin Hunter said. "I am unable to speak in my own voice" because an officer "thought he could become judge, jury and executioner".

On Thursday former officer Joseph Walsh, former detective David March and officer Thomas Gaffney were cleared of charges of obstruction of justice, official misconduct and conspiracy.

And the Hits just keep on coming.

At least 5 people killed at SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida, police say

A gunman who barricaded himself in a SunTrust Bank in Florida killed at least five people in the branch on Wednesday, Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said. The suspect called authorities to say he had entered the bank in Sebring, about 85 miles south of Orlando, and began shooting, according to Hoglund. Authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Sebring resident Zephen Xaver, who is in custody.
"We've suffered significant loss at the hands of a senseless criminal doing a senseless crime," Hoglund said.
It wasn't immediately clear if those shot were bank employees or customers. The victims have not yet been identified and family notifications have not yet been made, according to authorities.
"This is a terrible day for Sebring, Highlands County and for the state of Florida," Gov. Ron DeSantis said.
The incident began with the phone call to authorities from the suspect around 12:36 p.m. He said he had fired shots inside the bank, according to police. Sebring Police and Highlands County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene.
Initial negotiations to try to get the barricaded suspect to leave the bank were not successful, so a SWAT team entered the bank and continued negotiations.

    NORWALK, Calif. (KABC) --
A mother in Norwalk was hospitalized after her child accidentally shot her while he was in the backseat of their car Wednesday.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and crime scene tape surrounded Ramona Preschool in the afternoon hours following the shooting in the parking lot.

"We received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon gunshot victim. When deputies got there, they found an adult female Hispanic with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her upper torso," Deputy Marvin Crowder said.

The woman was shot while sitting in the driver's seat of a black Honda outside the school. Her children were in the backseat when her son, who is under the age of 5, somehow got hold of a shotgun.

"It appears to be an accident with the young kid pulling the trigger of the shotgun in the backseat of his own car and striking his mother," Crowder said.

Delia Camaren lives across the street from the school and said she can't believe this happened in her neighborhood.

"It's very scary because, like I said, my grandbaby goes there. He could have been in school. It could have happened inside the school. We don't know. It was really scary to have this happen," she said.

The mother who was shot is listed in fair condition. Her children were placed in the custody of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

The shootout happened Sunday night, and officials say the robbery suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire.

The NRA published an article with the headline "Target Practice" next to a pic of Pelosi and Gabrielle Giffords (the congresswoman who was shot in the head few years back).

    You stay classy, NRA!

House passes bill for universal background checks

The House on Wednesday passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which would require background checks for all firearm sales, including those sold at gun shows and online.

Why it matters: This is the first gun control bill that Congress has considered in nearly 25 years. Gun control has been near the top of the Democratic agenda since the party took back control of the House in November's midterms, galvanized by recent mass shootings and student-led activism.

The bill, HR 8, also prohibits firearms transfers by a person who is not a licensed dealer. However, it does exclude "gifts to family members and transfers for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense," according to the House Judiciary Committee website.

    • House Republicans were also able to add an amendment to the bill — with support from some Democrats — that would force the NICS background check database to notify ICE if an undocumented immigrant attempts to buy a firearm.
    • Critics of the bill, including shooting survivor Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), note that universal background checks would target law-abiding owners and could not have prevented several recent shootings in which shooters had passed a federal background check.

What to watch: Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) told CNN on Tuesday that it's "unlikely" the Republican majority will take up the bill for debate soon. A second bill, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, is up for a vote in the House on Thursday. It would extend time for the FBI to conduct background checks.

Of course it will never get past the Senate, probably not even past McConnell.

But the important thing is that it gets added to the list of NRA interventions....

    USA! USA! USA! etc.

    Chortle.

GRANGER, Ind. - An 11-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after shooting his father due to his video games being taken away.

Indiana State Trooper Matt Makowski was shot by his 11-year-old son February 22. Police officers were called to the home a week before the shooting to perform a welfare check as reported by WSBT.

A neighbor – who did not want to be identified – says she has personally witness the boy hurt children.

"The behavior out of that child has escalated throughout the years. I have personally have had issues with him and my child," she said. "I've seen how he can twist from being happy and playing like a team - a little baseball in the yard to wanting to kill somebody and hit them and knock them to the ground bloody and bruised."

Police found Makowski with a gunshot wound to the pelvic area. He was rushed to the hospital and taken into surgery. He spent some time in the ICU but has now been moved into his own room in better condition.

After homicide investigators spent 12 hours on the scene, authorities determined that it was his 11-year-old son shot him and the boy was taken into custody.

He told police he was angry that his parents took his video games away and devised a plan because "He was done with all that" and "wanted it to end."

11-Year-Old Charged With Murder in New Hampshire Double Shooting

An 11-year-old is in custody after allegedly killing two adults in a shooting Friday in the Lakes Region town of Alton, New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said Friday night that 50-year-old Lizette Eckert, who had suffered a gunshot wound, was found dead after police responded to a 911 call on Dobbins Way around 7:30 a.m. Her husband, James Eckert, 48, was also found shot.

James Eckert was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead later Friday night, the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said.

An autopsy was completed Saturday on Lizette Eckert. The manner of her death was ruled a homicide and the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head.

An autopsy has been scheduled Monday for James Eckert.

According to Geoffrey Ward, a senior assistant attorney general, the juvenile suspect was apprehended around 9:30 a.m. He was charged with one count of reckless second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The charges filed are under the juvenile system. It's not immediately clear if he'll face additional charges now that James Eckert has died from his injuries.

Because of the suspect's age, Ward said limited information would be made available to the public.

Officials said there is no danger to the general public.

The nearby Alton Central and Prospect Mountain High schools were placed in lockdown during the time when Ward said authorities were searching for the suspect.

"There is no current threat to ACS," Alton Central School Principal John MacArthur said in an email. "As a precautionary measure we have activated a secure campus. Nobody is permitted in or out of the building until we are given an all clear."

State police tweeted around 9:45 a.m. that the "critical incident" had come to a conclusion and the schools lifted the lockdowns shortly after.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call New Hampshire State Police at 603-223-4381.
