Thanks. So there's no thread? Thai on Thai or tourists is more relevant than what's happening on the other side of the world surely? Nobody living in Thailand is going to be affected by US deaths but may be by Thai deaths or tourist deaths.

Not that I am aware of, and unfortunately, I think that you will be wasting your time and effort using this forum for that type of research. Most threads that focus on political issues fall apart by the third reply.
Now, if you need a name for your newly formed pie company, you are in the right place.
Again, that's just not true.Originally Posted by Mr Earl

And ones capable of mass slaughter are a much bigger problem; they should be outlawed.
It's only tools like you that defend the NRA.
I'm just surprised you haven't jumped on how much money they spend on "school safety", but then again that's probably because you know we'd take the piss because it's all just an NRA marketing campaign to get kids wanting guns at a young age.|
And as for waiting until the bodies get cold, perhaps if you gun whacks didn't bleat this every time schoolkids are massacred, and offer you "thoughts and prayers", something might get done.
Let's hope the kids do their stuff next week. I think the majority of Americans are fucking sick of that NRA shit now.

The exact etymology of the term "assault rifle / weapon" is unclear but what is not disputed is that it arose during World War II with the Sturmgewehr 44 - i.e. almost 80 years ago. Further, as you can see in that link above, the US Army was using and defined the term in 1970 (if not even earlier) in Army intelligence document FSTC-CW-07-03-70.
I found this out with literally a 2 min Google search.
Not really.Originally Posted by Richards
From your research can you say when the last mass shooting occurred in Thailand?
Plus I'd say that if your point of comparison is a third world country then that's a problem in of itself. Just because something is worse somewhere else doesn't mean it should preclude discussion of it.
From your link
It states, “Assault rifles are short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges. So an AR-15, being just a semi-automatic civilian rifle, is not an “assault rifle,” nor is it “high-powered” since its typical 5.56x45mm chambering is a medium-powered cartridge.
“Assault weapon” is essentially a spurious term created or at least codified by the expired Federal “Assault Weapon” ban of 1994.
Not the point. You're the one that's conflated 'assault weapon' with 'assault rifle', and stated it was an invention of the Dems / media never used by the military.
That's simply not true.
^^quibble quibble quibble
The "assault rifle" rifle the military refers to is a selective fire weapon. Something not available to the public.
The Colt AR-15 is simply a semi-automatic rifle not an assault rifle.

This thead’s about US gun deaths (including the alarming rate of mass shootings).
Why have you quoted my words back to me. I'm aware of the words I write.
The title is Americans getting shot not US gun deaths and on a Thaicentric forum I assumed the obvious.
I'm furthering my questioning here because I detect a preference to ignore the local problem and discuss one as far away as it's possible to travel. This issue has hampered my research efforts about deaths occurring in several countries and I'd like to find out why.
Richards, are you of the American persuasion?
we just need to know before moving to stage 2.
warmest regards.
Because your words are contradictory. Again, good luck with the research though.Originally Posted by Richards

There's no contradiction but you're welcome to explain. It would help more to know why expatriates in Asia, only a small proportion of whom are American, find gun deaths in the US more interesting than gun deaths in the country they live in. I can only presume it's due to the sensationalism of mass shootings in the same way aircraft crashes are more widely reported and discussed than motorbike crashes despite causing far fewer deaths per capita.
Well whaddaya know... turns out that 100% of the murders in Bournemouth committed by obsessive narcissistic fantasist nutters were by the same guy. Killed multiple girlfriends apparently.
I’m going to write a series of novels about it.
Apologies for the interrupt in your argument with Mr Earl but I believe assault rifle and assault weapon are slightly different. The latter has a shorter barrel and is normally referred to as a carbine, lighter and easier to handle than a rifle but not as accurate at longer ranges.
To add to the confusion the AR-15 comes in rifle and carbine lengths, the latter being a true assault weapon. The difference is about 4" in length so which was used in the shooting?
Yeah that’s not true either. You post a lot of things that aren’t true don’t you.Originally Posted by Mr Earl

Can you see the contradiction he wanted to show me instead of answering my question Mr Earl? I've no idea. If he can't understand that I'm researching American homicide deaths around the world and my current focus is types that occur in Thailand then I probably don't need to address him further.
I think you're closing in on it. That, plus the fact that local on local shootings really aren't of much interest to expats. I used to live in Thailand, but have lived in the Philippines for the past two decades. Filipinos shoot each other on a fairly regular basis, but unless it's in my province, I'm very unlikely to know the parties involved. As far as local on tourist assaults/murders, guns are rarely the weapon of choice. Ditto for tourist on local assaults/murders.
