    Paul Ryan Thread

Figure Romney, Obama & Mad Joe Biden all have their own threads aboard here, let's start a Paul Ryan Thread:

First off, to combat the lies and miss-truths coming out of the Obama campaign, let's look a little closer at the Medicare lies, eh?

"This video lays out the clear choice our nation faces on Medicare: Will Medicare become a program in which a board of bureaucrats manages its bankruptcy by denying care to seniors? Or will leaders work together to save and strengthen Medicare by empowering seniors to choose health care plans that work best for them, with less support for the wealthy and more help for the poor and the sick? House Republicans have advanced solutions to save Medicare. Instead of working with us, the leaders of the Democratic Party have opted to play politics with the health security of America's seniors."

Ryan took social security when he was young and has lived off government paychecks for almost his entire adult life, and his family got rich from government contracts:

    Paul Ryan didn’t build that! - Salon.com

Paul Ryan’s great-grandfather started a construction company to build railroads and, eventually, highways. According to the Web site of Ryan Incorporated Central, the company was “founded in 1884 with a single team of mules building railroad embankments in Southern Wisconsin.” And in the 1800s, railroad construction was subsidized by the federal government. Mid-century, President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act into law, providing taxpayer dollars to fund the construction of a transcontinental railway. All railroads thereafter connected to, and benefited from, that public investment.

At the turn of the century, Ryan Inc. turned to road building. A subsidiary family corporation, Ryan Incorporated Southern, states on its Web site, “The Ryan workload from 1910 until the rural interstate Highway System was completed 60 years later [and] was mostly Highway construction.” The $119 billion spent by the federal government on the Interstate Highway System was, by one account, “the largest public works program since the Pyramids.”

And, according to the Ryan Inc. Web site, the company completed “some of the original work at what would become O’Hare Airport” in Chicago. Originally, O’Hare Airport was a manufacturing base for World War II transport planes. In other words, it’s likely that construction project, too, was paid for by tax dollars. A current search of Defense Department contracts suggests that “Ryan Incorporated Central” has had at least 22 defense contracts with the federal government since 1996 , including one from 1996 worth $5.6 million.

When President Obama said that we succeed in America “because of our individual initiative but also because we do things together,” he was actually speaking in more general terms — about manufacturing companies that ship their goods on our railways and highways and thus indirectly benefit from that public infrastructure. With a net worth of up to $3.2 million and ranking as the 124th richest member of Congress, Paul Ryan very directly and very significantly benefited from the federal spending he now rails against.

    What a load!

So does that mean as people turn 55 they will get the same benefits are those who are 55 or older now? The benefits go to the old people and those who will in short time become old will get treated like lesser people. So the younger folks get screwed so that the old corupt geezers can keep their SS. If there are cuts cut it all or cut nothing. Ryan is a hypocrite and typical sly politician kissing the hands of the people who feed him money.

In 1988 Paul Ryan as a high school senior was voted "Biggest Brown Noser" in the school’s yearbook.

That was hardly a 'question', was it...

That wasn't a public gathering- it was a private Rotary Club function- if you yell and scream and disrupt a private gathering like that (especially one that features a political figure with security concerns) you're going to be arrested- no big shock.

Just because he's running for VP doesn't mean someone has the right to act like that during his speech.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Paul Ryan is a typical right wing, populist Drama Queen, using soapbox rhetoric (and logic) to advance a radical right wing agenda. An agenda that most of the mainly white middle Americans that form the staunch Republican base are not knowingly voting for. It is a disconnect that will come home to roost, demographics alone make that inevitable.

Paul Ryan would have you panic about runaway government expenditure, and the creeping expansion of government into all areas of public life and enterprise (whilst running for the party that passed the 'Patriot' Act). The figures and trends simply do not back this up.

Federal tax revenue is lower than it has been in half a century. The federal government's revenues from income taxes on households make up 6.4 percent of GDP; which is 1.1 percentage points lower than half a century ago, and 3.8 percentage points lower than the peak in the boom year of 2000. Our current tax revenues are not only low relative to historical levels, but they rank low internationally as well.

Rhetorical budget hawks such as Ryan simply fail to state the embarassing, because it would reveal their hand-

after taking into account deductions and other big tax benefits, the actual percentage of a rich household's entire income paid in taxes has also fallen precipitously, dropping from 31.3 percent for millionaires in 1993 to 22 percent today.

So, no, the rich are not paying their fair share of taxes—neither as defined by historical American norms or by international standards. And, the result of that shirking of responsibility is sluggish growth, diminished social mobility, declining educational attainment, and lost business efficiencies due to our insufficient and often outdated transportation and information networks.

Blame Budget Shortfall on Tax Cuts for the Rich | Debate Club | US News Opinion

Having been first hand witness to the failure of the Bush tax cuts, and subsequent debt load it added to the federal government, a true budget hawk would automatically allow the temporary cuts to expire. But I digress- the GOP are no more budget hawks than the liberal wing of the Dem party. The right wing ideology that now dominates the once more broadly republican GOP proactively wants the federal government debt to keep increasing- thus giving them a concocted Imprimatur to continue slashing government expenditure quoting 'necessity' ('defence' excepted, of course). Classic tail wags dog strategy.

Why don't we have a look at what Reagan budget adviser David Stockman has to say about Ryan's budget..

The Ryan Plan boils down to a fetish for cutting the top marginal income-tax rate for “job creators” — i.e. the superwealthy — to 25 percent and paying for it with an as-yet-undisclosed plan to broaden the tax base. Of the $1 trillion in so-called tax expenditures that the plan would attack, the vast majority would come from slashing popular tax breaks for employer-provided health insurance, mortgage interest, 401(k) accounts, state and local taxes, charitable giving and the like, not to mention low rates on capital gains and dividends. The crony capitalists of K Street already own more than enough Republican votes to stop that train before it leaves the station.
In short, Mr. Ryan’s plan is devoid of credible math or hard policy choices. And it couldn’t pass even if Republicans were to take the presidency and both houses of Congress. Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan have no plan to take on Wall Street, the Fed, the military-industrial complex, social insurance or the nation’s fiscal calamity and no plan to revive capitalist prosperity — just empty sermons.

Little Green Footballs - Reagan Budget Adviser David Stockman: Ryan's Budget a 'Fairy Tale'

    Full article:

Mr. Ryan professes to be a defense hawk, though the true conservatives of modern times — Calvin Coolidge, Herbert C. Hoover, Robert A. Taft, Dwight D. Eisenhower, even Gerald R. Ford — would have had no use for the neoconconservative imperialism that the G.O.P. cobbled from policy salons run by Irving Kristol’s ex-Trotskyites three decades ago. These doctrines now saddle our bankrupt nation with a roughly $775 billion “defense” budget in a world where we have no advanced industrial state enemies and have been fired (appropriately) as the global policeman.

If his medicare changes are ever enacted, would the vouchers issued for insurance be issued to people living outside the U.S. and be used to buy health insurance in a foreign country? I'm 59, so it would not apply to me but it would be nice to get some medicare benefits to be used outside the U.S. I'm not counting on it.

How do you define 'looking affluent' in Australia? Wearing a shirt?

The GOP has always been the white man's party in the US- if Obama wins re-election it will be primarily through minority votes.
