    A Pack of Gutless Bastards

This morning there is a Thai bloke, who runs a tattoo shop opposite my guesthouse, beating the crap out of his Thai girlfriend. He has the door closed, he's thumping, she's screaming.

I made my feelings known and commenced a determined walk across the road to tell this gutless prick to cease and desist, or cop a busted nose. I'm not a hero, no longer young and fiery, but, when an 80kg idiot starts beating the living daylights out of a 40kg shiela, I have to do something to intervene.

    Not so fast Davo, apparently.

I have heard some bullshit since arriving in this place, but now I hear that 'Thai custom' prohibits my interference. The whole neighbourhood can hear this dreadful event and I have been told to do what everybody else does....listen, smirk occasionally, analyse it amongst gutless friends, and do sod all about it.

I have been told that if I interefere, all these cowards who apparently sanction the merciless beating of a woman, will band together and give me a hiding.

The more I stay here, the more I look forward to my October departure. I can deal with the politics, the crime, the corruption, the censorship, the dirt, the stink, the lack of professional application and so much more.

But not blokes who beat up women...How I wish this dirty bastard was doing the same thing in suburban Australia.......

Interfering could be dangerous for you. Closed door, angry guy already whaling away.

Honest question: what is your Thai speaking and listening level?

How would you communicate with this guy?

I have always found that a fucking good kicking communicates your displeasure at the persons actions regardless of your language skills.
I too can't stand cowardly little shits that beat women and have found that every single one of them will run a mile when confronted with a man
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

He deals exclusively with westerners. He speaks english. However, no matter the language who doesn't understand the sort of body language tjhat goes with 'stop'!

It was put to me that it is dangerous to confront (perhaps you missed that bit in my original post), and I understand that. 30 years ago, I probably wouldn't have let that worry me. But the point is not anything to do with my level of Thai communication, it is purely to do with a level of animal behaviour which is unacceptable in most societies, but apparently not in this place. The Land of Smiles?....Bullshit!

I have been told that only a woman can "interfere" when a couple are arguing/fighting...not a man...(talking Thai rules here)...

Not sure about Korea...but I had a Korean guy by the throat and backed up against a glass window, for attacking a female friend who owned the bar/restaurant we were in...both female owners (sisters), including the one who was attacked, were screaming at me to stop...It was sheer instinct on my part, but clearly should not have been attempted by a foreigner, at least; however, the guy fcked off and things went back to normal...

I learned my lesson when I intervened in a domestic dispute. The woman was back with the husband next day and not a word of thanks from the bitch.

Very good chance that while you are dealing with him, she will come and take the back of your head off with a lump of wood or somesuch.
No one will thank you, probably not even her

Ask any cop in the US, and they will tell you the calls they hate the most are the domestic disturbance calls. You don't know what happened, they're both lying, and whichever one you arrest, or have to restrain, the other one will turn on the cop. It a no win situation. Plus, the battered spouse will almost always refuse to press charges, which is why the law in many states mandates that the cops press charges if there are signs of blows having been dealt. I understand the OP's frustration, but I think best sorted by Thais. Whatever the OP does will end up being wrongly perceived, and if the OP causes the spineless little fuck to lose face, the girl will likely get pounded worse next time - and without a doubt, there will be a next time.

Ask any cop in NZ and you will get the same answer.

    Wise words.

^I agree. My point remains that a culture which promotes the protection of gutless bastards who belt women, is a culture not in itself, worth protecting. We need to understand it is the same culture which promotes people like Yubumrung junior into the police force, despite him being a cop killer, and it promotes an endless list of people who have done hideous things, which the authorities know about, but which the popular culture tolerates.

Of course the US, NZ, Oz and the UK have domestic violence. But in those countries the people and the authorities will react against it. Those who continue to batter their spouses become social pariahs....Here, it is simply business as usual and don't talk about it. That way, everybody can delude themselves that it didn't happen.

By extension those people who know about these goings on, can justify their lack of decent and proper action and presumably therefore, wouldn't feel guilty about their cowardice even if the victim died.

Guy at home only has one eye.

Pulled into a gas station late in the night and witnessed similar.

    He intervened.

The metal bar to the face, followed by a good stomping, would probably make him think twice of doing it again if he saw it happening.

Obviously it would have to happen on his right side for him to see it though. He hasn't got left vision anymore.

It's common across Asia, not everywhere, but common - Korea is pretty extreme for it.

It points to deep underlying socio-cultural problems, tis true.

Here in Australia the Aboriginals belt fuk out of each other. Its perfectly normal for them.

The men bash the women then the women bash the men, nobody does fok all as its just the way it is.

    Only a fool would interfere.

I feel your frustration but big call to interfere in domestic matters, never know what has gone down before hand.

Bollocks to the delicate idea of not intervening and direct social outcome.

Make sure that the little prick gets the message.

Fair enough, and intentions are honorable, but the outcome would most likely involve a machete or gun. Know what consequences you consider acceptable before taking the chivalrous route.

I thought that myself until a guy in the next village gunned down a woman for interfering in an argument. He was drunk so i suspect he merely got a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again.

I have come to the aid of a couple of people here, one an elderly farang who was receiving a few punches from a Thai restaurant owner for slightly damaging his parked scooter and the other involved a thai lad in receipt of a good kicking from a few of his 'mates'

On both occasions the matter was dealt with within a few seconds with no repercussions. Like most i am not looking to get involved in the physical sense but for me it's difficult to walk away or to ignore such incidents where people are the target of violence and appear to be at a great disadvantage.

It's not for everyone and as mentioned can have serious consequences. My pet hate, like BWD, is women being physically abused.
