Does it really matter ? If memory serves me correctly whites are averaging around 2 kids per couple for a few decades now while people of color around 3 ... Don't remember the exact numbers but whites are definitely the lower number.

It's lovely to see gays in proud uniforms of the US armed forces, isn't it? It's them who'll protect you from now on.

House Republicans have been using taxpayer funding to foot the $2.3 million dollar bill to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in a number of cases. While the Supreme Court was weighing Windsor, the other cases challenging DOMA were put on hold. Now that the Court has overturned DOMA, the House is abandoning its defense in the other cases. Here is how attorney Paul Clement withdrew from a case of servicemembers suing for military benefits for their same-sex partners:

The Supreme Court recently resolved the issue of DOMA Section 3’s constitutionality. The Windsor decision necessarily resolves the issue of DOMA Section 3’s constitutionality in this case. While the question of whether 38 U.S.C. § 101(3), (31) is constitutional remains open, the House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court’s opinion in Windsor, that it no longer will defend that statute. Accordingly, the House now seeks leave to withdraw as a party defendant.

Presumably, its intervention in other cases will similarly end. Thus, the federal government will no longer be spending taxpayer money to defend discrimination against same-sex couples, though the money already spent — which could have actually helped people — is lost forever.

    House Republicans are assholes
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

an update where things stand today

    California makes 13 states
Whether some like it or not, Pennsylvania might be 14

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Officials in Montgomery County have agreed to issue same-sex marriage licenses, despite a Pennsylvania law that bans the practice.

    D. Bruce Hanes, the county's register of wills, said he wants to come down "on the right side of history and the law."

Hanes had been prepared to issue a license Tuesday to two women who contacted him last week.

The women, however, changed their minds following a discussion Tuesday morning with the Americans Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, which has a separate lawsuit pending to challenge the state law.

"Had the couple sought the license today, I would have issued it and wished them all the freedom, independence, happiness and rights that our commonwealth’s Constitution purports to grant to them," Hanes said.

    That’s it, 14th state (maybe )

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — At least five same-sex couples obtained marriage licenses Wednesday in a suburban Philadelphia county that is defying a state ban on such unions.

Alicia Terrizzi and Loreen Bloodgood, of Pottstown, were the only couple to marry right away, exchanging vows in a park before a minister and their two young sons.

“We’re not setting out to be pioneers. We don’t think our family is any different than anybody else,” said Terrizzi, a 45-year-old teacher. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this.”

The licenses issued Wednesday in Montgomery County are believed to be the first to same-sex couples in Pennsylvania, the only northeastern state without same-sex marriages or civil unions.

    Snip

Democratic Attorney General Kathleen Kane has announced that she will not defend the state’s gay marriage ban, leaving Gov. Corbett and his legal team to defend the ACLU lawsuit.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out,……..

On Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed suit in the state of Virginia challenging that state’s ban on same sex marriages. According to a press release on the ACLU website, the organization was joined in the suit by the Virginia ACLU and LGBT legal defense organization Lambda Legal.

The groups filed the case “on behalf of two lesbian couples who represent a class of same-sex couples who want to marry in Virginia or who are already married elsewhere and want Virginia to respect their marriages,” said the release. In 2006, Virginia passed the Marshall-Newman Amendment to the state constitution, which defined marriage as being between a man and a woman, and also banned civil unions and other domestic contracts between same sex partners.

Who’ll be next to get a number? Guess it all depends on which state decides to piss away good money to fight the lawsuit/s.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling in late June has encouraged gay couples to challenge bans on same-sex marriage in states across the country.

"It's raining lawsuits," said one lawyer involved in several of the cases.

The legal storm follows the Supreme Court's June 26 decision striking down DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, a law that barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages in states that permit them.

And although the five justices in the majority said their ruling was "confined to those lawful marriages,” it is nonetheless reverberating in courthouses around the nation.

In fact, such an outcome was predicted by one of the dissenters in the DOMA decision, Justice Antonin Scalia. "The majority arms well every challenger to a state law restricting marriage to its traditional definition."

Now, new challenges to state provisions that ban permitting or recognizing same-sex marriage have been filed by gay couples in six states: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

    edit: Forgot this article

U.S. officials paved the way on Friday for same-sex spouses to visit or live in the United States, announcing the State Department will give equal treatment to visa applications of gays and lesbians who want to travel with their partner.

Secretary of State John Kerry, announcing the measure at the U.S. embassy in London, said the shift will allow the department to start processing requests from married gay couples the same way it handles those from heterosexual spouses.

    another edit: just found out

Same-sex spouses of military members could get health care, housing and other benefits by the end of August under a proposal being considered by the Pentagon. But earlier plans to provide benefits to gay partners who are not married may be reversed.

    snip

In the new draft memo, Hagel says the department intends to treat all married military personnel the same and "make the same benefits available to all military spouses, regardless of sexual orientation."

Heh...given all these queers (by in large, Democrats) getting 'married' might be a good thing after all. In a few generations of no offspring, perhaps the party of Jim Crow will be but a memory...

The Pentagon plans to extend full personnel benefits to same-sex military and civilian couples by Sept. 3, it said Wednesday in a historic recognition of gays and lesbians that it made in a routine press release.

“The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring that all men and women who serve in the U.S. military, and their families, are treated fairly and equally as the law directs,” it said.

    New Mexico

Doña Ana, New Mexico, County Clerk Lynn Ellins (D) announced Wednesday that his office would begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The move comes days after the state’s Supreme Court declined to expedite a marriage equality case, saying the case should first go to a lower court.

New Mexico has no constitutional prohibition on same-sex marriage and no explicit statutory ban — but still has not previously allowed the practice. A recent review of state codes by state Attorney General Gary King (D) found that while some statues implicitly require that marrying couples include one male and one female, the equal protections required by the state’s constitution render these rules unconstitutional. King said he would not fight any lawsuit demanding same-sex marriage equality.

New Mexico District Court Judge Alan M. Malott’s ruling today could not be more clear: Denying marriage equality rights to same sex couples is blatantly unconstitutional and unenforceable under New Mexico state law. He has ordered that marriage licenses be issued by the Bernalillo county clerk to couples regardless of gender, beginning immediately.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) today ruled that same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes. The ruling applies regardless of whether the couple lives in a jurisdiction that recognizes same-sex marriage or a jurisdiction that does not recognize same-sex marriage.

The ruling implements federal tax aspects of the June 26th Supreme Court decision invalidating a key provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

“Today’s ruling provides certainty and clear, coherent tax filing guidance for all legally married same-sex couples nationwide. It provides access to benefits, responsibilities and protections under federal tax law that all Americans deserve,” said Secretary Jacob J. Lew. “This ruling also assures legally married same-sex couples that they can move freely throughout the country knowing that their federal filing status will not change.”

Under the ruling, same sex couples will be treated as married for all federal tax purposes, including income and gift and estate taxes. The ruling applies to all federal tax provisions where marriage is a factor, including filing status, claiming personal and dependency exemptions, taking the standard deduction, employee benefits, contributing to an IRA, and claiming the earned income tax credit or child tax credit.

U.S. Department of the Treasury - Same-sex couples who think they would have received a better tax rate by filing jointly in past years can file amended returns for tax years 2010, 2011 and 2012, according to the press release

    OK this is #14

Gay marriage news out of New Jersey, where the state Supreme Court has ordered marriages of gay couples to begin on Monday.

New Jersey will become the 14th US state to legalize gay weddings.

NJ Supreme Court rules same-sex couples can marry beginning Monday - U.S. News

The New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled that the state must begin granting same-sex marriage licenses on Monday, a rebuff to Gov. Chris Christie.

Christie, a Republican, favors civil unions, which New Jersey has offered since 2007, but opposes gay marriage. The state had tried to delay the granting of gay marriage licenses pending an appeal of a ruling last month that found the state must allow same-sex couples to marry, saying that not doing so deprives them of rights that were guaranteed by the U.S. Supreme Court in June.

Hawaii will be #15 later this week (?)

Senators passed SB 1, the "Hawaii Marriage Equality Act of 2013", on their third reading Wednesday afternoon -- after passionate, and often very personal testimony.

SB 1 is already making it's way through the House. It passed it's first reading, but not without a fight and a lot of political posturing. It now advances to both the Judiciary and Finance committees for a public hearing, which has been scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in the State Capitol auditorium.

Hawaii Senate passes gay marriage, sends to House

    there's a race to 15

Gay marriage passes the Illinois House, on a 61-54 vote (60 votes were needed).

The legislation will go back to the Illinois Senate, which passed it earlier this year, and the Senate will vote again (since the bill was subsequently amended). The Senate is expected to easily pass the bill again, when it will then go to the Illinois governor, a Democrat, who has promised to sign it. It’s considered a done deal.

Marriages will commence June 1, 2014.

#15) Toady, Hawaii’s senate and house have passed SB 1/Hawaii Marriage Equality Act of 2013 and the bill should be signed into law by the governor (Neil Abercrombie - D, will sign it into law later today or tomorrow, Wednesday, November 13) which will allow couples to marry starting December 2, 2013.

#16) In Illinois a same sex marriage bill has passed the senate and house and will be signed into law by their governor (Pat Quinn is planning a celebration, so the date is uncertain) and will go in effect June 1, 2014.

    Other news,……

Last week the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (which bans workplace discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation) which will be sent to the house where it will die, because of the rethugs.

So let’s see where the Rethugs stand on winning a presidential election in light of recent news.

The Republican house will not take up a bill which bans workplace discrimination (LGBT) so they’ll lose that vote. The GOP controlled house will not take up immigration reform which was recently passed by the senate so they will lose most all the Hispanic/Asian votes. And we recently found out unmarried women and young voters have a problem with the rethugs so,..they will not get their vote. And if you can think/add 2 and 2 together and get 4 the GOP will not get your vote. The rethugs just aren’t into science.

Is there any group (besides old uneducated cranky ill-informed white men/women) the rethugs will not try to repress?

    yup.. Hawaii signed it today...

I am considering getting ordained and specializing in gay marriage.... since most ministers will not perform gay marriage and the fact that thousands and thousands will come to Hawaii to get hitched... I might as well make some foldin' money off the deal! what does a minister charge? $200 a gig?

what do you guys think of me changing my name to The Reverend Herschel Happiness?

it costs $250 to get ordained and $10 to get a state license.

Welcome to my church in the garden of dysfunctional love.

As American society degenerates further into the pits we see where this exemplifies the case for heterosuxal marriage.
President Barack Obama issued a statement [Tuesday] congratulating Hawaii for legalizing same-sex marriage, a move he said “exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation.”
Imagine explaining to the heroes who lost their lives through the generations in defense of America that this is what they died for?

    Values we hold dear???
