The rationale is that during the good times more healthy women can produce more healthy sons which spread out and outcompete other males and spread their oats far and wide. This is a gamble since a male's reproductive success is depenedent on success in a competitive environment. During lean times more unhealthy females will give birth to more girls since a female will never be short of a willing sexual patrner so gene propgation is guaranteed.
