I would like to visit Koh Lanta but have mixed reports, when is the best time to go and what do you think about it?

Depends what you want out of it? If you want 24 hour parties and the like then it's not the Island for you.

If you want somewhere to chill out and do some diving then it might be more up your street.

I went in "Green Season" and it does get a fair amount of rain and the mozzies are a pain in the arse but was good just to chill out.

Got a great deal on a nice bungalow, with breakfast, free internet, DVD player and DVD's in the room for 550b at a place called Ancient Realm. Highly recommended.

Speaking Swedish has an advantage there too. Or not depending how you look at it.

Personally I loved Koh Lanta... Stayed there about a month after a massive few weeks in Pattaya and Phuket after giving my liver (amongst other things) a smashing back in the day. Originally planned for a week or so, but kicking back by the beach (stayed about 100m from the beach in a concrete bungalow at about 300THB a night incl aircond) got the better of me. The guy who owned the bungalows used to send the fish monger to my hammock and I'd pick out that night's dinner from the big tray(s).. 'twas awesome...

Re : muslims... yep, the owner, his missus and kids were all muslims. And they were great. Recommended places to go and see, and in the end if I was hungry I'd just let them know and they'd make me something for lunch and it was always delicious. Lunch time generally went like this:-
    "Red, you hungry"
    "Yep, hungry"
    "OK"
... and before I knew it, lunch was served.

FWIW "New Beach Bungalows" was the place. Could still be great, could be crap by now. I was there in 2002 and 2003.
Just trying to have a little bit of fun, folks, that's all. - Dean Martin

As for Koh Lanta its a perfect chill out zone. Its not great for night life but then again thats not why you would go.

Well I tend to avoid Muslim islands .
I stayed in Lombok ,Indonesia , next to Lovely Bali.also a chill out zone .
My accommodation was right under the shadow of the Mosque .
Muslins are noisy ignorant pigs , they broadcast the call to prayer at high amplification ,at all hours of day and night and it can go on for 20 min +.
the 5 am one bleats out something about it being better to pray than to sleep.

Had the same problem in Jakarta ,but in cinema surround sound from several Mosques competing for customers .
So i'm right to be cautious about Koh Lanta

But you are right about being fearful of the raging innards of my head .............
if you ever got in there, it would be like a Balsa wood raft navigating the Niagra falls
