a search for hotels in Raynong have turned up only 1 that has even 1 recommendation .. the Tinadee.
raynong seems to be a tourism black hole.

google raynong & rayong is suggested by google as proper spelling

the beaches & clean air of the Andaman coast are very good for me.
are there Phuket level beaches near raynong?

probably of all Thailand I have searched Raynong has the fewest tourist facilitates
are there any long term 'farang apartments / condos' ( = a/c & internet & TV) in Raynong?
high speed internet available in Raynong?

I lub Phuket / Bangla Road tu mutt .. but it is very bad for my health .. & pocket book

Ranong is a border crossing point without any amenities for tourism, or very little of a class above backpacker status. Look further south along the coast. Takuapaw (sp?) is slightly better. There is an island there with a couple of nice small resorts Ko Koh Kaw I believe is the correct spelling.

Beautiful island that has miles of beaches (did the last time I was there prior to the Tsunami of 04'.

Hard to find but the bib will help if your serious.

As you can see above there are plenty of resorts in Ranong. Unless you are dead set on Ranong, suggest Khoalak just south of Ranong.

I just about live in Ranong these days. I like it. You got mountains, Andaman sea, rivers, hot springs, and parks to occupy your time. It feels like Thailand. Not the usual fast paced tourist hussle. Very few "farang" amenities. Though a big Tesco/Lotus just arrived a few weeks ago.
Lots of hotels to fit any budget. There are some islands nearby which are being rapidly developed I hear.

I f'ed up this post some how .. the system refuses to allow any formatting .. re: I practically live in ranong .. nice beach a bike or tuk tuk ride from city center? Day trips to the Andaman Islands? what about access (bus / limo) to the "Gulf of Thailand side's" transportation, the southern line rail & modern highways. is the required 21st century amenity high speed internet available? Seems I've heard of mobile phone internet ? BKK condo type shorter term / monthly leases? Probably i should consider getting a hotel for several days & explore.

Rode thru there a couple of years ago. It's out of the way, but hardly undiscovered territory. Seems to be popular with the "travelers" bong-hit crowd. I saw quite a few dreadlocked dumbasses stumbling around, and was asked if I wanted to buy pot upon check in at one of the guesthouses.

My own fault for not looking around enoughon arrival. Besides the usual backpacker ghetto guesthouses (just look for the somchais mulling about in Carabao costumes) there's a few Chinese-style cheap hotels on the main drag. Clean fan room, quiet, for 200 baht - a bargain. I would avoid the expensive, so-called "best" hotel in town. It's outside the city center.

I agree that it's worth visiting there, although you'd better bring a raincoat. I recall reading somewhere that Ranong gets the most rain of any province in Thailand. There's some hotsprings in the area, and I've heard good things about Koh Chang. No, not the Koh Chang in the gulf, but the Andaman Koh Chang.

As I recall, the place I stayed at had AC rooms for 600 baht. In any case, there are a range of accomodation options along the main drag in town. I would avoid staying outside of town, not fun.

I've done a fair share of traveling in Thailand, and in general finding accomodation is not a problem damn near anywhere you go. I should say that I travel with my own transportation. And my Thai language skills are pathetic. It's not rocket science.

Traveling outside of the tourist areas, if I'm in transit and need to bed down for the night in a strange town, I always start looking near the local hospital. You'll almost always find a decent hotel around the hospital in my experience.

Kiwi Orchid used to be OK (real basic but the breakkies were OK) when the Kiwi was there; think he has long departed. Mark's Sophon Hideaway Restaurant always did great food (farang & Thai, on the main road -- Ruangrat Rd?) and there's a nice set of clean bungalows a couple of blocks from there (ask at Sophon's). A few small live music clubs around town, but they always change. Lots of beaut waterfalls and pools and parkland near the city.
Runs'n'Roses has a guest lodge in Phato village. Beautiful spot! The folks there also host a home for unwanted kids (think they never like to call it an orphanage). info[at]runsnroses.com

AirAsia has 3 flights a week into Ranong from BKK. Dirt cheap, 1200 baht. Airport's out in the boonies.
If you have loads of time I think the train to Chumpon would be fun, then the bus to Ranong.
Try the Jamsom Hot Springs hotel. Lovely hot water and good food nearby.
