What is it like to live in Songkhla.

    Hi you Southerners.

What is the cost/standard of living like in Songkhla? Much to do? Golf etc.

    Cheers, TP

N00b here, been lurking a while,

I've lived in Songkhla for 15 months now and I like it. It depends what you're looking for I suppose. There's no tourists here but there's a large expat community due to oil workers, helicopter pilots and english teachers. There's ample golfing between Songkhla and Hat Yai (about a 30min drive) and there's regular competitions which you can easily get involved with and you'll never be short of someone to play with. The community is friendly and inviting, a good bunch of people.

It is cheaper living here than any tourist spot, and none of the bullshit: farrang prices, ripping off tuk-tuk/taxi drivers, watered down spirits etc. No discrimination from the police either.

as for activities, during the week I gym, swim, dine, hit the bars, whatever. Saturday afternoons I'll either play football, go mountain biking, run the Hash house Harriers or be on a motorbike run. weekend evenings I'm round the bars, plenty places to watch the football. There's nightclubs if you want them or like I saud the larger city of Hat Yai is only half an hour away. There's also the beach, Tai Kwan Do, Muay Thai etc.

Take a visit, go for a beer at The Corner Bier and take it from there.

Hope this helps, anything else feel free to ask.

    I'm 27 btw.

Merely an example that it's a tourist free zone. no begging, watch sellers and all that annoying you either. Yet the tourist places are close by if you want it and cheap to get to.

I stated my age in reflection of the 'retirement looming' comment. Sure, I'm pretty young compared to the average farrang age but that doesn't mean there's nothing on offer here. Horses for courses I suppose.

Thai Pom has tee shirts that have been around longer than 27 years.

Looking South? Where the hell will I keep my all my stuff? Don't tell me I've got to move it all upcountry.

No matter, good luck with what ever you are up to; even if it's just another of your queries about options.

Songkla is ok nice and clean few bars behind that hotel whatever it's called, like the guys say Hat Yai not to far away and has some good pubs, "The Pub" "The Post" "Brown Sugar" all owned by the same family buy have live bands.

Then the Water Bar that was really good place also in Hat Yai does have a beach bar and reggie bands playing there

I have made a couple of trips down there already, and I like what I see. Looking forward to the change after 24 years in Bangkok.

    Yep.

You'll have fun. Songkla is lovely, and enough expat joints with the oil rig guys around. Hat Yai is OK...some good food joints, but not as laid back as BKK or the beach towns. Had some good steaks and wine there cheap and one excellent Chinese (likely many more)...names will come to me. The wet market is good, too.
