Nakhorn Sri Thammarat... what say you?

I'm thinking of making a move to Nakhorn Sri. Anybody have any experience living or working in that area? I've been around the south a bit but have only ever visited Nakhorn (the beaches) for a couple of days at a time.

From what I hear from Thais, Nakhorn Sri Thammart is a vile and dangerous place inhabited by thieves, gypsies, murderers, and all sorts of things like that. Seems to have that sort of reputation around the south so I don't know what to think. I've certainly never had any problems when I was there, so I don't know if this could be chalked up to provincialism or what.

If anybody's living down in that area and has some feedback, let me know.

    Cheers.

By the way, did a search for this topic before posting it. Didn't come up with anything but I realize that there's probably more than one way to spell the above location so I'll check some of the other options and if there's something already out there, my apologies.

I've heard that friends of friends like it, that sort of thing. Just never really spent any time there myself. Find it a bit funny and slightly worrisome that Thais seem to think it's danger central (anymore than anywhere else).

    Na, thats Pattaya.

Seriously, Nakhons reputation for this goes back to their maritime tradition, particularly to the Vietnamese refugee days. Like many seafaring folk, they've never been averse to a bit of smuggling and piracy- and their plundering and repacity of the Vietnamese refugee boats (whom they also resented) is a pretty dark chapter.

They are also noted for a certain clannishness- get in a fight with a Khun Nakhon, you're in a blood feud with the whole family. The town itself is a bit of a dump, the surrounding area very nice indeed. I say go for it- i found them to be nice, warm people actually (& the women...). Just don't pick any fights.

Almost every gunman for hire that has been caught or identified with murder in Phuket came from there. Mostly cops by the way.

    Nakhon is great.

With Korat it has the best looking girls in Thailand.

Check out the bull fights at Talad Cha Mao.

I lived there one year. I hated it. The good side are all the nice waterfalls nearby. They are truly beautiful. And if you go to a waterfall be sure to take your Thai girl with you so all those teckies can shout nasty shit at her.

The people are sort of friendly but once you're in trouble you're really in trouble.

Big big Mafia province. Lots of murders and drive-bys. Lots of accidents too. Lots of gang-related stabbings and shootings. I had a student who was a doctor at the central provincial hospital. I can't remember the exact figures he quoted me for the average daily arrivals of stabbing, shootiings and traffic deaths/injuries but I do remember the number was high and awfully disproportionate for a providence the size and population of NST.

They rank on Mussies a lot there, keep them down and in their place. The Muzzies were my favorite people, the Muzzie part of town my favorite place to be.

A lot of farang like it there but not this kid.

I just may know something about your school, there is one good one. PM if you're interested.

Thanks for all the replies. I think of myself as (generally) not a very stab-worthy guy so I think I should be okay there. These posts do echo the things I've heard in the past though: clannishness, gunmen, mafia.

I'd actually be outside of the city by a bit, so it might be a little boring but probably nicer and safer? Who knows.

My Wife is from Nakhorn Sri Thammart we go down there a good few times a year, for the past 3 years and I really like the area, CT was right about the waterfalls, stunning.

I also had to visit the Main Hospital and there were loads of teenager , early 20's men who looked like they had been in a major car crash, the wife told me it was a gang fight. I would hate to take a beating like they took.

I'm going again for 2 weeks over xmas and NY can't wait! Not looking forward to the 12 hour drive.

Lived in Nakhon for almost 8 years now. Never had a problem. Like anywhere in Thailand if you go looking for problems you're going to find them! Might not be every ones cup of tea, depends what you are looking for but there are many here who love the place.

Came to Nakhon in 1990, met a young British guy who was working and that was about it regarding farangs. Been married to a Nakhon lass touching 18 years and lived in Nakhon for a lot of that time. In that time there have been at least 3 farangs murdered either for business reasons or robbery. Various other farangs have had trouble with the locals but they have pretty much deserved it. There are a few who have literally fled!

The local people are friendly and will treat you likewise but if you act like an arse that's exactly how they will treat you.

The farang population here has mushroomed in the last few years and now, in just the city alone there must be over 100, mostly working and also a few retirees and others living out in the sticks. If you're looking for a small city, with islands, waterfalls etc nearby and off the tourist trail, Nakhon might be for you. If it's the girly bars and nightlife you're after, Nakhon is probably not for you.

    Just MHO

3 farang murders in 19 years isn't much. That many would die every week in Pattaya.

Bangkok has heaps of murders but I've never seen any.

    Trouble follows bad people.

Very rarely do good people get murdered for nothing.
