| Samui tourism operators urge Govt to build 2nd airport Samui tourism operators urge Govt to build 2nd airport February 23, 2008 Surat Thani - Tourism operators on the popular tourist-destination Koh Samui renewed their call for the government to build the second airport on the island. Surat Thani governor Winai Buapradit said Saturday that the operators called on the provincial administration to carry out a feasibility study and push for the construction of the second airport on Samui. The governor said the number of tourists visiting the island increased every year but it was inconvenient for the tourists to visit the island. Winai said the tourism operators complained that the air fares at the privately-owned airport were too high, and thus affecting tourism. The governor said he had instructed the office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand in the province to work with other government agencies concerned to prepare information to propose the project to the government. | Wonder how much sway Bangkok Airlines has vs. the rest of the tourist industry. Airfares are about 1000 baht higher to Samui from BKK than to Phuket. The 5000 foot runway is also at an absolute minimum for jets to take off and land though the ATR turboprops can handle it just fine. USM is however one of the most interesting looking airports I've ever seen, a lot more attractive than Phuket and I that dump at U-tapao. |

| I imagine that it would cause a few problems at air traffic control, due to the small size of the island. The biggest question has to be, where do they intend to put it? |
