If your going from Thailand to Penang by train you will be going through Sadao and Padang Besar border point and will eventually end up in Butterworth, anyway this is the Padang Besar train station.
Think the platform was made for a different size train looking at that gap.
There's a money changer towards the end of the platform, you will need some small Thai money when you get to Butterworth to get the ferry across to Penang, the ferry costs1.2 ringgit, ie about 12 baht.
When you first get off the train you just head inside this building and go through Thai and Malaysian immigration.
That done it's time to nip upstairs to the cafeteria, note that the toilets are always locked so if you have been saving it up because you didn't want to do it on the train, well you got a few more hours of saving to do yet
The meals and sandwiches are pretty crap, but they do sell cans of drink, crisps and biscuits so you wont die of starvation.
The rice and sauce was okay, I don't eat chicken bones though.
Yep the Malaysians have got some big guns.
