    Chumphon

Is there a shop that hires out motorbikes at Thung Wua Laen Beach or do we need to hire them in town?

Is it a nice beach to stay at? All the reports say it's the best beach.

I stayed there a few years ago, plenty of bikes for rent there so just jump a songthaw and head out. Nice biking the surrounding area.

As per usual in the good season the beach is beautiful but off season its shit and virtually deserted.

    Good cheap accommodation there though.

Go check it out. Should be OK now.

Ok thanks. Did you visit any of the islands close to the mainland?

If you're in town, hire from there, that way you can get back to town when you need to - songthaew stop running around 5 ish in the evening.

As Terry says, some decent cheap accomodation on the beach, and right now the besach is pretty decent (quiet) but gets a bit busier at weekends with Thai tourists.

I booked a hotel at the beach and we fly in late arvo so handy if they have bike hire shops nearby for the next day.

Some people on the web said the sandflies are an issue in the area. Hope they aren't too bad.

They give you a good excuse to constantly mess with your knackers.

Have you booked transport from airport to beach - it's about 30km?

I emailed the hotel about that. They responded to the last email quick so I'll find out soon enough. Hopefully it's free pickup given we booked a few nights.

Is the airport south of town?

The airports about 50km north of town, and about 30km north of tungwualen beach.

Good thing I've booked a hotel and planned ahead then. I thought being a small town the airport would be 10km out.

when i worked in lang suan i hired a motorbike from the farang bar in chumphon town. when i moved away i parked the bike outside and posted the keys with a note through the letterbox. a year(!) later (and without any money being paid) they phoned me to ask if I was going to return their bike
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

    Don't go there! Ever!

It's full of northern people who sodomize livestock - and they don't tend to discriminate between the barnyard and guest houses after a few ales.

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Mind you, having said that, The Fame pub near the station does a rare tomato and mozzarella on focaccia...

You wouldn't be able to find sage words like that in the Lonely Planet, you know.

    I won't bother next time.

Lonely Planet does seem to gloss over the seedy underside and various deviant sub cultures prevalent in many locales.

^ Doesn't even get a mention in the Rough Guide, and the case in point only just made this month's edition of The Beastialitist.

It also, somewhat surprisingly says nothing about the number of bike riding westerners murdered on that very dark stretch between chumpon town and the beach.
I know withenalstoke wized up and got a (sort of) car, but you think they would offer some warning.

Essentially being a thoroughfare to the gulf's most popular islands, it's hardly surprising that the authorities, and TAT, want to mask the fact that Chumphon is the most volatile and xenophobic province in the country.

I certainly won't be going again.
