    Exploring Kaeo Cave in Pran Buri

    After recently visitng another cave in the mountain area in Pran Buri I had passed another sign for different cave and went back today to check it out.

    Couple of notes on this cave. This cave was discovered by a monk named Kaeo some 250 years ago from what I can gather. It was not one that anyone lived in. I consider this an intermediate cave and what I mean by that you are going to do some crawling in tight areas(or some crab style walking), you will need a flashlight. You can rent one from this little ol guy at the base but I am not sure he is there all the time so bring your own. They are 50 baht if he is. A headband style is better but you can swing it with anything.

    Absolutely wear jeans, good shoes and its not a bad idea to wear a long sleeve light shirt. The stones and walls are abrasive if one should lose their balance. The signage to get around is OK but if you struggle with keeping your bearings you might get a bit spun around. If you have any claustrophobic issues do not go. It is narrow and tight in areas to get the truly beautiful open chambers.

    Unlike the other cave I recently visited this one is not as scenic getting to it and not as open when in it. The hike up to it is less but the terrain is very jagged and sharp. I highly recommend this cave but for different reasons. It is good fun. I apologize for the overall quality of some of the pictures, I shoot all my pictures with my BB Bold 9700 phone. I am not a camera carrying guy.

    Some pics from the trek;

    There are many creatures down there from a few snakes, some huge crave Crickets, a few big lizards and tons of bats

    One chamber we walked into was loaded with bats. The picture was dark as I did not want to flash and spook them.

    The sharp edges and pitted holes on the weathering surfaces means this is a limestone area. It's called Karst weathering after the geologist that first recorded a description of it. The edges can be extremely sharp.

    The caverns are also limestone and the stalictite and stalagmite formations are dissolved calcium carbonate reforming into calcite and gypsum with any colours provided by other substances mixed with the country rock.

    Not into caves myself, must be the claustrophobia in me, but enjoy the photos.The prospect of large snakes being there a major turn off.

    Good stuff JP. I also enjoy caving and the wildlife.
    Krabi and Phang na must have hundreds of undiscovered caves up in the hills.

    Is it just me or does that cave entrance pic look slightly like a vagina?
