Phuket Gazette or Phuket Wan?

Phuket has several online news sources, obviously the biggest 2 are Phuket Gazette and Phuket Wan, which do you think is the better one?

For me I prefer the layout of Phuket Gazette, don't like the rotating stories in the Phuket Wan, but for news stories I think the Phuket Wan wins hands down.

Wan for me... a bit more hard hitting and quicker to react than PG. Publishing any newspaper (digitally or on paper) here, in Thailand, must be a nightmare. You're damned if you do and damned it you don't. Either the expats are calling you soft or the bureaucrats re suing you for libel!

The owner of Wan is up his own arse, but at least he's got the balls to report the news mostly uncensored.

Phuket Wan seems to be the only one in Thailand that actually does a bit of investigating and, more importantly they actually follow stories up, days, months and years later. The Bangkok based media could learn a lot from them.

I got agree with everything said about Phuket Wan, but I think they are walking a dangerous ground, although you have to admire them for their cajones, there used to be an online news place for Koh Phi Phi, the farang got shot and went home to Germany I believe and that was the end of that, takes a lot of balls to tell the truth in Thailand.

There is a free english weekly left in the hotel lobby called Phuket News. Don't know if it is affiliated to either wan or gazette. It is very vocal in its reporting and condemnation of the tuk-tuk nonsense. It also had a long article describing the 30 year historical background to the situation and how the tuk-tuk gangs were originally relatively law abiding and well intentioned, including having a written code of conduct that was given to all drivers (including the rule that violence will not be used either A. against tourists or B. against drivers while they are carrying tourists - the implication being that violence is OK outside these situations ) - interesting.

Anyway that paper is quite good too but don't know if it exists online.

I believe that was Koh Phangan, actually- he got shot in the ass for trying to end the Black Moon/Half Moon parties.

We have a small town of expats in Phuket and the standard and array of local papers is excellent.

HB You said it !! Morison pisses me off really like no one else ever could, and many, many others too but he will cover the shit and forces PG to also. I have noted a real aversion to actually investigating local politicians The Tree Killer Gov for instance. I often think he has some personal ties that he won't consider breaching.

When PG didn't have to report the real shit, tourism was better , but it was just all fluff and columns written by those with a lot to lose in property... The P post seems to mirror quite a lot of PWan. Too much dioxide and glossy ink, though. I won't buy it.
AS Pattaya media is whore driven, Phuket goes land and condo.
No need to learn Chinese, they'll know English.
