Aussies Seriously Hurt in Rock City Patong Melee

Aussies Seriously Hurt in Rock City Patong Melee

    UPDATE

Patong police have arrested one person - believed to be a member of a nightclub's security staff - in connection with the brawl early on Monday.

A reader has sent the following video link:

    Original Report

PHUKET: Three Australian tourists have been injured in a wild Phuket brawl early today that also involved security staff at a popular Patong nightspot.

Superintendent Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao of Kathu Police Station, which oversees Patong, the nightlife capital on Phuket's west coast, confirmed that the brawl had taken place.

The colonel was in a meeting late today at Phuket Police Headquarters in Phuket City with Phuket Police Commander Major General Chonsit Wadhnawarangkun.

The brawl took place outside Rock City, the most prominent of several nightspots in Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, at the top of the t-intersection with Soi Bangla, Patong's famous walking street.

Phuketwan has yet to confirm initial reports that two of the Australians were seriously injured, and that one man, said to have been struck in the face with a bar stool, may require plastic surgery. A second man is reported to have required many stitches to wounds.

It is not known whether security camera footage captured the brawl.

The Australians, all large men, were reported to have been celebrating a birthday. They had been drinking.

As many as 15 locals are reported to have been involved in the brawl, Phuketwan has been told.

While the reasons for the brawl remain unclear, the outcome is likely to reflect poorly on Patong and its tourism reputation.

Honorary consuls have been at pains in past incidents to make the point that tourists do sometimes start trouble, but in Patong, the retribution from locals is often severe.

Major General Chonsit's predecessor, Major General Pekad Tantipong, has previously urged tuk-tuk drivers and bar staff to call in police rather than carry out their own rough justice.

In February last year, two Australians in a brawl with Patong locals were knifed and one was stabbed close to the heart in an incident described as attempted murder.

The wounded Australians left Phuket rather than face a counter-suit by their attackers that would have obliged them to stay on Phuket.

A German expat resident of Phuket, Kurt Trotnow, 53, was bashed into a coma in August when a dispute with a Patong tuk-tuk driver over an extra 100 baht for a fare quickly escalated into a ''dog pack attack.'' Mr Trotnow was lucky to survive.

In October, two Italian tourists earned the ire of locals in Soi Seadragon - a lane of bars that runs off Soi Bangla. One of the tourists was put in hospital after being hit with a golf club.

Police say the number of incidents involving drunken tourists in Patong has increased alarmingly.

Two weeks ago, Major General Chonsit called on venue owners to control their staff, and to make sure there were no drugs or weapons on their premises.

His call followed one of the nastiest of incidents - this time not in Patong but in an after-hours pub in Phuket City, on the other side of the island.

Between six and eight staff members at the pub participated in an axe attack on Phuket resort owner-manager Vorasit ''Wan'' Issara, who managed to make sure his friend, Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner, was ushered to safety as blows rained down on him.

Even though Mr Renner was unharmed, the attack made international headlines. In the wake of their son's fortunate survival from the axe wounds, his parents Srivara and Songkran later called for an end to the ''social environment that allows this kind of thing to happen on Phuket.''

Khun Wan told Phuketwan that one of the things he found shocking was that he gained the impression his attackers thought he was Korean.

No doubt some insecure Thai men lost face and got their wee little hearts hurt and they mobbed the Australians.

I have not met any misbehaving Aussies or one that I did not like as of yet. Some of the friendliest people I have met in my life are Australians. On the other hand I have met a slew of insecure, egoistical Thai men that get off on being agessive, brawling arseholes. 15 to 3 says it all.

I heard one Aussie curse and the hollering was them looking for their friend who was missing after being ganged up on.

The guy that posted the video posted this in the video description -

aftermath of attack in Rock City Bar, Patong. Bunch of thai's on 3 Australians. Australians- happy dancing to heavy metal, Rock City Staff- happy with weapons, glass, bar stools and extreme violence. Ended when they were all on the ground with bleeding heads and their girlfriends in between them and thais. check the slo mo- ones still holding a chair, ones cleaning a bloody weapon... I came back from the toilet to see big dude being pumelled with 2 metal chairs, falling to the ground, and I stop the thai guy (in white) from hitting him on the ground in the face (which would have killed him as he was flat on the ground).
Causes? um.. dancing on the podium? bumping the angry security guy? not buying enough drinks?
No warnings. All i saw was these guys started the dance floor- i have photos of 10 extra westerners starting to dance with them having a mad time... band having one of the girls come up on stage... everything looked pretty sweet and happy.

Rubbish. Aussies are just as likely to get pissed and behave badly and it's just as likely that they took on 15 people (though the newspaper says 'as many as 15' so in all likelihood it was much less), convinced of their own superiority as it happening the other way round but as it is, you don't know and I don't know.

^^ In total, 7 years but I'm not sure what that's got to do with your not knowing why the fight started.

Because experience prevails with me. I know not to touch a hot pan or swat a hornet's nest or play with cobras. Over the years, I have seen Thai men with very few exceptions (I can't remember any at the moment) that resemble a hot pan, a hornet, a cobra and many other examples of thing I know might be painful to interact with.

As far as what started the fight? There was no need to finish it. Thai men can't just walk away. The loss of face is too devastating. They certainly can't lose for the same loss of face reason. So they come in an onslaught of 5 to 1 or more to insure a win.

You can argue all you want. I have met many, many, many, many Aussies and found every single one of them to fun loving, friendly, hospital and decent. I have met many, many, many Thai men and can't say the same at all. I can only say worse.

So when fights start in Australian pubs, whose fault is that? (At least, I think once every decade or so, there's a bit of pushing and shoving in a pub somewhere in Australia). And could the reasons those fights start also explain why a fight might start in a pub in another country when Australians are in that pub? Unless you've got some totally mental preconceptions about Australians and Thais, that has to be a possibility.

No sense in arguing with you. I know what I read and see in the Thai news every day. I know what I have lived with for over a decade and what I see in my day to day life in Thailand. My personal experiences trump your arguments.

It may not be PC for people to call it like they see it these days, but I have never been one to adhere PC rules.

Unfortunately I must agree with you. Wether there Aussies or not is simply irrelevant as dudes simply party a little to hard sometimes and shit goes down.

Don't take much to kick it of when the place is twisting off with a bar full of drunken fuk ups yelling and screaming fuking " Oye Oye Oye look at me I'm pissed of my brain and have just drank 15 Singas. "

Anyway, Shit happens dudes and its all ways the drunk fuks that attract it.

^^ Yes, that's right. Open ไทยรัฐ and it's a record of the daily slaughter which goes on in pubs up and down the country; open The Australian and it's all flower arranging and tea dances in Aussie pubs.

thais like to fight in packs, doesnt matter who they are up against, aussie, yank ,jap.

i once saw a pack of thais kick another thai to death in soi cowboy, hundreds of people including an armed uniformed cop watched, nobody made any attempt to interfere with what was going on. the gang calmly made their escape after finishing the job. nobody challenged them.

one of the bouncers in the club must have tried to restrain one of the aussies from going onto the stage, the aussie must have pushed him off. the thai pushed back, the drunk aussie pushes back again, as you do when youve had a skinful, and then it all kicks off, all the thais jump in, they dont know why they are jumping in, but its a good opportunity to kick a foreigner. starts from nothing.

listen to the comments these lowlife taxi drivers, touts, doormen, motorcycle drivers make when tourists walk by, and notice the hate implied in the comments. its nastier than just regular banter, its hatred with an undercurrent of racism.

after the violence, they know they can mostly lie their way out of any police enquiry, and the police probably feel the same way towards the tourists. little sympathy.

loud, badly dressed, aggressive compared to thais and therefore offensive, drunk, demanding, showing little respect, chasing their women and with loads of money.

of course they feel resentment, they are from the lower classes of thai society, greatly disadvantaged, seething with anger that as thais they cannot normally show, relatively uneducated, easily moved towards envy and jealousy, and love a fight. and when they fight all those things, all that bottled up anger and resentment explode out. and god help anyone who gets in the way of it.

    • Thais shooting each other because someone stared at them in a pub - recent story.
    • Or Mooham running over a crowd of people getting off a bus.
    • Or the Thai policeman in Pai that shoot the Canadian in the street in broad daylight over some trim.
    • Bodies bound and dumped in klongs with concrete weights around their necks.
    • Steel wires strung across a Pattaya soi to knock a farang off his moto-sai and rob him.
    • The farang - I believe an Aussie - that died after being hacked with a machete and robbed by Thai guys what got probation and had to pay 30,000 baht restitution.
    • And the list goes on and on and on.
Yes, you are correct sir, compared to all that, it is all flower arranging and tea dances in Aussie pubs.

For the record, I love living here. I just do not wear rose collocated glasses like some blinded folk do. My wife and family is great and so is the life I have here. I just "know" Thai men and have no desire to "know" them. It is not just me, my wife makes it a point to have no dealing with them. Many members here and their wives feel the same.
