Phuket to Chiang Mai bus set for early 2011

PHUKET: Travelers with plenty of stamina will soon be able to travel directly by bus between Phuket and Chiang Mai, a journey of almost 24 hours.

Green Bus, which already holds a concession for air-conditioned bus transport in Northern Thailand, plans to launch the service in early 2011.

The journey will take 22 to 23 hours.

Somchai Thongkhamkhoon, managing director of Green Bus parent company Chaipattana Transportation, said the company won the concession for the service from the Department of Land Transportation in mid-August.

The company has ordered five new air-conditioned “VIP” buses at a cost eight million baht each to service the long-haul route.

While normal Thai “Standard 1” VIP buses are 12 meters long with 24 seats, the new buses will be 15 meters long and seat 30, Mr Somchai said.

A Chaipattana Transportation public relations officer told the Gazette the cost of a round-trip journey is tentatively set for "about" 1,700 baht.

The service will probably start in March, she said

Thai Airways and Thai AirAsia currently operate daily direct flights between the two cities, which takes around two hours.

Admitting the journey for the new service was rather long, Mr Somchai said the route would help train company staff in long-distance driving.

The company also plans to launch bus services from Thailand to Kunming in China, he said.

Following the new Asian Highway R3a, the route will leave Thailand at Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai Province, pass through Laos and connect to Kunming in China's Yunnan Province.

Can't imagine people will use it, 24 hours on a bus is just way too long.

    The Chiang Kong Bridge.

The road south of CK has been widened to within 20 km of Toeng.

Widened in the sense that they're demolished and graded everything 3 -4 meters on either side of the existing road.

    This is all dirt.

Local inhabitants have had to arrange their own slip way / driveways.

Many houses and shops were completely cut off.

The original road is a minefield of pot holes and ditches all the way into CK.

The shoot off to the bridge is, to date , just a bull dozed track.

No work has started on the bridge at all.

No idea what's happening on the other side.

Land prices have gone through the roof. It was, of course all bought up by the powers that be, over 2 years ago.

I might put some pics together next time I go into CK.

    It really is a joke.

Unless you lived on that road.

It just looks like a normal bus.

3 meters longer with 3 rows of extra seats so that will probably equate to a couple of extra inches per seat over the whole bus.

There, I've painted it green for him. I'll send the bill to Somchai Thongkhamkhoon.

You can get a flight for just under 1,800 Baht with AirAsia.

I'm sure the bus will be a winner.
