PHUKET NIPPLE ALERT: Staying abreast of nude on our beaches

BARE ESSENTIALS: Nudism, even ‘quasi-nudism’ is illegal in Thailand.

PHUKET: NIPPLE-wielding beach lovers take note: You could find yourself spending a night in jail instead of getting that all-body tan if you break the law.

Ignorance when it comes to nudism in Phuket, through my peepers, seems to be on the rise.

Perked and sagging, jiggling and swinging – more and more Western boobs are turning heads on our beaches this high season.

Prudish as it may sound, Western ladies – and men in some cases – should be a tad more sensitive to the culture we live in. Exposure of one's privates in public is definitely frowned upon here.

Lessons can be learned from one love-struck Thai woman who whipped off all her clothes and ran down Soi Bangla after her fiancée proposed to her last year. She was
arrested and fined.

Exciting as her 100-yard birthday-suit dash must have been, the fine and next morning’s wake-up call would have been a sobering reminder that nude is rude in Thailand.

Swinging your best bits around like it’s Woodstock ‘69 won’t cut it here with the law – beach or no beach.

Observing the steady rise of pseudo-nudism (hogans out) over the past few years, I can’t help but think it’s getting out of hand.

Unimaginable was one such incident on Phi Phi, as our party ambled along the busy side streets en route to the ferry pier.

Loitering next to a male food vendor were two brunette 20-somethings, wearing only bikini bottoms and sandals, casually conversing with the man.

Delight was smeared across the faces of the teenagers milling around out of earshot behind the brunettes, but there were plenty of furrowed brows around from other stall owners showing their disapproval of the hooters menacing them.

Before the young ladies could buy their fruit, an elderly Thai woman from the next stall waded in and spat out her disapproval, handing the nimble temptresses a dirty old
sarong for cover.

Eager not to upset the already hostile elderly woman, the ladies covered up and scampered off, no doubt to the beach to strip off again.

Crikey, I thought, some people just don’t get it.

Crikey that's been going on for years. I've never heard of anyone being arrested.
Generally the partial nudity on the beaches in Phuket is tolerated and accepted.
Sure it's Thailand custom not to go topless, but it's also Phuket which isn't representative of Thailand. Eurotrash made Phuket what it is today.
Uptight Thai's will take it back to the stone age if the had their way.

Plenty things illegal in Thailand. If there is a baht to be made in doing the illegal, Thais have a way of accommodating the practice. Gambling is illegal but Lottery is sanctioned by the government. Prostitution is illegal but government sets aside "entertainment" zones all dedicated to the practice.

Ignorance is indeed rampant. Any tourist who decides to run about with exposed tits or wobbly bits on crowded beaches such as Patong deserve to be arrested for their ignorance and lack of common sense. There are several beaches on Phuket where folks can bare it all without worry. All are secluded and locals could care less as they are profiting selling food, massage services and the like. Folks wanting to practice nudity on the beach, Mai Khao beach up on the northwest coast of Phuket is one of several where the practice is accepted and ignored by the BiB.

A word to the ignorant. Do your homework. Thailand ain't Europe. What is allowed in Europe may well end in fine or jail when you're in Thailand.

Whilst I am not a prude and have been around topless female bathers for most of my life and whilst living in Oz I reckon most females look far better with a full swim suit/bikini on.

Some females should not take their top off no matter where they are.

I think that there should be some compromise. If they were to set up a quality control booth at the entrance to the beach where their assets could be inspected so that only mamories of the highest quality went on display in public then I think the locals and foreigners would see the benefits.

I'd like to offer my years of experience in QC if it would help the community.

Didn't stop the park rangers from looking a a couple of scandie birds tits for 4 hours on Ko Samet.

Scandies are the worst, I saw a couple of extremely wrinkled over 70's shuffling down Kata beach once, both wearing gold lamé thongs and nowt else. It was enough to make your eyes bleed.

Yep. Another where it is acceptable. Probably changed now but when I lived in Phuket years ago, Laem Sing Beach just north of Kamala was another. Nice thing about Laem Sing Beach a bit of a hike from the road so most visitors are fit.

I agree with Norton, it is plain Ignorance to prance about half naked exposing private bits on normal public beaches in Thailand (and in many other country's), just like shopping/ eating at restaurants etc. without a tshirt miles from any beaches etc. It's pretty easy look around you and notice the level of bare skin exposure with the locals and then adopt something not far from that.

If you do have special wants then seek out the places catering for them like Norton says. But be careful there have been incidents of rape and murder on secluded beaches where the temptation have been to much for some psychos.

Back home everyone runs around semi nude or all nude and all ages at that, I'm used to it and I could not care less, normally I don't even look it is just so common that you cant see the woods for all the trees.

Considering the Thais think that picking there nose in public is fair crack I think that Farangs hanging there tits out are far more preferable.
