Have a Happy Phuket Holiday - But NO Booze

Phuket Police arrest 15 for alcohol ban violations in Patong

PHUKET: Fifteen people were arrested for selling alcohol at bars and restaurants in Patong on the Khao Pansa Buddhist holiday on Tuesday.

Kathu Police Deputy Superintendent Praya Chansomwong ordered police to be on the lookout for violators of the alcohol ban that was in effect on Monday and Tuesday, according to a report in the local Thai-language press.

Violators will be fined 20,000 baht each and their cases forwarded to the public prosecutors office, according to the report.

I can imagine Spain deciding on booze free days, that wouldn't go down too well.

Ironically, one of the greatest things about the Buddhist religion is that it does not force itself on others. I knew the Monk at my school, brought him food and good quality fruit juice because he liked that better than milk for 2 years. Finally one day, he asked me what religion I was. I told him Catholic but I do not practice. All he said was "you should" no effort to convert me, no preaching and it has never been mentioned again. A truly fascinating and intelligent man I'm glad I have gotten to know him.
I recently asked him through an interpreter about the bar/alcohol closures on holidays, his response was to call it a "sad mistake" and misguided.
