Lotus Restaurant and Tom Yang Goong Restaurant on Bang Tao beach

    People,

I live in the UK and have been visiting the Dusit Thani Laguna in Phuket over the last four years.

The Dusit Thani Laguna is on Bang Tao Beach.

I like the Dusit Thani Laguna mainly because of its closeness to the beach which allows me to wander down the beach in the day for a cheap massage and at night where I visit either the Lotus Restaurant and Tom Yang Goong restaurant both of which are established restaurants and have been on the beach for around 30 years.

I have received an email from a friend who has advised that basically a lot of the smaller restaurants on the beach (which are mainly wooden shack built cheap structures) and also massage buildings have been either demolished or served with a demolition order as they are on public land. There are also reports of this online.

The Lotus website says it is closed (I cannot post links to please search lotus restaurant phuket)

What I am trying to gauge is whether anyone whos if the closing of the Lotus is temporary or permanent and whether anyone has 'inside knowledge' of when the Lotus will be back up and running and how / when etc.

    Thoughts would be appreciated

    Naughty

Why not get a cheap hotel and splurge on the massage girls?

Whats the name of this bird youve been backdooring at the Lotus ?

I am almost certain that the Lotus, and most probably Tom Yam Goong, will have been removed under the major beach cleanup that Phuket beaches have undergone since the advent of the coup and strongman General Prayuth. You can now actually see the beach for the first time in 20 years.

Thanks Capex I am trying to find out whether the Lotus and Tom Yam Goongs (who are both well established restaurants) are actually still in place etc

If the NCPo shut them down as it says on their website then they are gone.
There are no backroom deals on the beach cleanup, everything has gone/going.

There's an excellent photo thread here with pics of the beach cleanup from a few weeks ago.

Best thing is to look through the past few months of the pertinent news in the local (Phuket) English media (Phuket Gazette, Phuketwan, Phuket News etc).

Massive clean up of every beach, not only Bang Tao. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the effected locals of course, but generally welcomed by everyone else. Probably the biggest clean up was at Surin.

They were all wiped out by the "04," Tsunami, but rebuilt bigger and better.

Just a few shacks there in 95. Sheraton did there best to wipe the scum suckers off the beach many times as they undercut their selfish over priced services.

If a tourist wants insulation from Thailand, then Bang Tao is your ticket. Mostly Muslim territory anyway as is Surin Beach.

No offense, Naughty, but you're coming across as a bit deranged. They served food. They were squatting illegally on the beach. They're FUCKING GONE!

    Davis,

Thanks for the effort in your response. I don't see any point in swearing.

The Lotus restaurant was a bit of an institution and many people in the area and tourists enjoyed eating there.

There are no more restaurants chairs or massages on the beach in that middle section, you have to go to the expensive Laguna resorts if you want food. There are also no convenience stores near by either.
BTW The beach is still covered in broken cement, tiles and other hazards, so wear your construction boots. There is are two reasonably priced places at the far north, about 3 kilometers walk from Laguna, and the Beach Club which is way overpriced .
