    Carrefour in Patong

Usually I hate shopping in big stores.

But last night to avoid mopping around thinking about having a drink I decide to check out the new Carrefour here.

I did a walkthrough when they first opened and thought initially it would be a farang attraction.

Last night I was surprised to see how at least 80% of the customers were Thai people.
    I started to see why.
Prices are cheaper than most places including Tesco and BigC.
The variety of goods available is astonishing!
I checked the clothing and electronics department upstairs. Clothing prices were very cheap and lots of Thai shoppers (should be a good place to meet ladies). The prices on electronics was also right in the game. Most of the shoppers there were thai!
The selection of cheeses, breads, fruit, ect is superb.
On my prior visit I noted their prices on wines and booze weren't the best so I wasn't tempted.

I was initially worried this store would have problems if they catered just to foreigners. Clearly they aren't and they aren't trying to gouge you either.

Anyway that was my big night out last night!

I hope you crack soon, it won't be long before your signature savings outdo mine.

    sounds quite exciting.
I watched 'little miss sunshine' at home.

I think I'll start a thread about what to do when you don't go to the pub anymore.

    Fuck I know...I know.
But I've confessed before to having a taste for nice french cheeses. I bought a couple of carrefoour brand camenberts and have them aging so that my eyes will water when I eat them!
Oh and the fresh baguettes are fantastic! Nothing is quite like a fresh baguette.

France itself would be a wonderful place if it wasn't for all the french people living there!

hehehe...yea I already know exactly what will make me crack.
Last year I cracked on the flight from TPE to LAX on the new EVA B-777ER.
While sitting in that nice business class seat they offered me a 12 year old scotch. Well that was end of my last liver holiday!
I have to go back again in April and have my seat in the B-777 already reserved! I'll see what happens this time. It was very good scotch!
    sounds quite exciting.

    I'm pretty easily entertained!

You guys who quit: Did you really spend 500-1000 baht a day on booze?

Now I don't feel so guilty about my 80-baht/four-Chang-a-day habit....

It appears that booze is twice as expensive in Phuket as in Chiang Mai.

    4 days down... 4000baht up..

    32 days down....16,000 up

Well, it's obviously a lot better than the Carrefour at Onnut. It has to be the worst supermarket in the world. It's French and there are more French products at the 7-11 in my Soi. It doesn't sell cheese, it doesn't sell French yoghurt, it has no French produce at all. It's full of lowlife Thais waiting for 5 o'clock so they can buy cheap Chang. I usually go to the Big C at Ekkamai but got bored of it, so thought I'd try out the Carrefour nearby. What a waste of space. At least the Big C has a deli counter and lots and lots of cheese - but it's bloody expensive.

Massive thumbs down for Carrefour at Onnut, glad the one in Patong is better.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

    Easily.
Finish work at 6.00pm, head for the Irish bar.
60 baht for a small bottle of sing times at least 6 = 360 baht.
Pootle over to the Pirate's cove.
4 more (at least) at 50 baht each = 200 baht.

4 -6 cans in the shop as a nightcap, bed by 12.00

Don't even talk about my weekends.

Like to say Thailand will be a nice place to stay if it wasn't all those thai people living here.

Please, try to be a little bit more objective Mr Earl.

Thanks for the update - I've been meaning to pop over to check it out. But that f*ckin' one way system and the nutter tuk-tuk drivers have been putting me off. Maybe I'll go in the afternoon - should be quieter then. Maybe.

I don't know how you do it. I don't think I've ever had that much to drink in one day. Six cans of Chang and I'm sound asleep.

It's a great store, it will change the lives for those of us who live here. I don't have to drive into Phuket town as much

The new traffic pattern is good except how these brainless idiots who use it as an excuse to go faster.
A bunch of new speed bumps and new cross walks would solve the problem.
We will never see a tuktuk driver suddenly grow a brain.

Oy!!! Tesco's is just as shite. They have a display in the middle of the fruit and veg section that has all the green herbs and veg. They keep spraying them with water so that by mid-afternoon they're either falling apart or so soggy that they start to rot.

The only good thing about Tesco's is that I can cycle there in 5 minutes. But it's another place that's full of lowlife scum. It took them about 3 years to realise their aisles were so close together that you couldn't actually get 2 trolleys to pass each other without knocking stuff off the shelves.

....and they also don't sell cheese.

Have you been up or down Viset road recently - the one from Rawai to Haiyek Chalong. At dusk, it must be the most dangerous road in Phuket.

Just yesterday, three VIP coaches were coming up from Rawai - no doubt full of high-spending Nips or Gowleas from Laem Promthep - and were overtaking everything by driving over both of the two central lines - on my side of the road - doing about 60 or 70 kph straight at me.

The b@stards think they own the road. I think I'll load up with some hefty stones and the next time I see one of these b@stards coming on the wrong side, I'll toss a stone out my window and see what happens.

    It's a good thing I don't carry a gun here.

Back in the bad old days when I rode motorcycle messenger in Wash DC and smoked cigarettes I was good at hacking up a big nasty green gob and launching it onto a taxi cabs windscreen! We were always doing battle with the taxifucks.
