Please help with Photoshop alpha masking

I've been at this for two days. I've seen all those God-awful tutorials where the guy mumbles and clicks shit as if anyone but him knows what he's doing.

The help files are easy enough to understand and I've tried every method I've found.

The problem is the masked area shows those white and gray checks in the field and you'd expect that area to come up transparent but it never does, it just turns to white.

So this is the character. I want to snip off the bottom of her skirt. As seen it's always just white, never transparent.

where isn't it coming up transparent , when you try to do what ?
usually the masked area does not show checks ?

I'm probably answering a different question as I'm only learning too

but I had a go at it

I copied your image in photoshop,
made a duplicate on another layer
selected the white bit on the duplicate layer
deleted it = turns to transparent checkerboard ,

Unticked the visibility of other layers and then went - save as - just the selected ticked visible duplicate layer as a .png file in my pictures windows library ,
the backgrounds there is white but I guess its still transparent ,
so opened it back up on photoshop and also another prog I have fotoview Pop Art Studio
and it was transparent still on both .

so my beginners guess if you may have had other layers visible when you saved it and thus blocked out the transparent bit ?
or more probably I'm talking a load of ..

will be interested to hear the proper solution if one of Td photoshop experts sees the thread .

Are you sure whatever your are trying to do with it / take it to supports transparency ?

I made a character transparent once, but didn't know what I was doing. Sure looked odd in the game. You have a couple of good observations there. I'll try unclicking the other layers

So I finally got a handle on it. It's easy once you know how.

I did these this week and the pack called, Way Shorter Skirts, is on a GTA download site and getting about a hundred downloads a day.
