Saving The Soi Dogs Of Pattaya

Now i got to admit, you dont see many Soi dogs in Pattaya these days, the roads are too good and the speed of the drivers soon culls their numbers, BUT.

So there is this Soi dog living near the resevoir which my girlfriend see's a couple of times per week, now she wants to save it, no fur and covered in whatever they get covered in when they got no fur and that, ie a scabby mongeral, so she suggested we catch it and take it to the vets, personally I don't want rabies and have no experience in catching rabbie infested Soi dogs, so now she is going to catch it and i am supposed to drive her to the vets with this wretched beast, what the fuk do these people think?

Feed him for a week in his present location making sure he knows who's putting the grub in his mouth, then the vet (call out) can do the business when you're clamping him..probably just a series of mange shots.

Tell her that a 1000 baht donation to the temple gives her the same karma points.

It will have mange. Its three jabs at the vets, some decent food and you might end up with a dog that looks like a dog rather than a sphinx cat. Only thing is, you have a dog with intense itching on every square inch of its flesh.... its bound to be a little grouchy. Personally I would recommend getting in touch with a local dogs charity, bkk has one so pattaya should. They probably have someone who could dart the dog first (: you know what they say.. sleeping dogs don't bit

One of our 'local' neighbours has a dog that has been loosing its fur for asprox. the past 2 months and has recently started hanging around the front of our house most of the time
The big problem is that our toddler is always wanting to go up and pat it.

Can anyone tell me what is this condition / sickness called and what's the cost of the cure please?

    Thanks STS

I'll make a donation to the neighbour and tell him to get it fixed.

I'm cautious not to buy into some long term, expensive proceedure that would see all the sick dogs in the neighbourhood being dumped in front of our home for free treatment.

I'm in a similar situation. The dogs at my local shop started to turn mangey and they always run up to greet me (I feed them every now and then) which is fine when I'm alone but when I'm with my daughter I tend to boot them out the way, which a) is not a good example to set to my kid and b) confuses the fuck out of the mutts. The dogs have already had their first injection though and are looking healthier by the day. I still wouldn't let them near my children though.

Although I am fond of dogs I hate seeing these poor animals out on the streets not only because they pick up every disease possible but the are a real hazard causing hundreds of serious accidents in Pattaya yearly.

Culling is the only way to go and in most cases you would be putting the poor animal out of it's misery.l

Out of thousands of soi-dogs your gf picked this one. Must have something to do with karma. Maybe the dog resembles a passed away relative.

I'd leave the mange as it is, more chance of spotting the ticks, now they are killers.

Agreed. I love dogs but hate to see the level of neglect and suffering they endure here due to the cop-out mentality of the locals.
Be careful what you wish for though. I remember a campaign to cull stray dogs in Phuket a while ago where several groups of local Muslims were actually hired to go spearing strays with a strychnine-dipped nail mounted on a bamboo pole.. The wretched dogs were screaming, convulsing and dying in agony in front of groups of horrified tourist families and the like.. Nice job. *golf clap*

^poor bastards strychnine usually kills by suffocation caused by lung muscle spasm and they would be lucid all the way to death, trying to gasp that last breath.... very Buddhist.

My own personal attitude to a lot of the strays is that really they should be fixed up or killed. Its what we (as in community) did with the local street cats, paid SCAD to sterilise them, fix any medial issues and we feed them. But if your going to kill them you should make it a clean kill. strychnine is just lazy and sadistic.

.. and cheapest, most easily sourced. Not like anyone would have done any research into this anyway.
