    October - November

October is the time of year when all the large stingrays come out of deep water to give birth they choose Pattaya because the bay is shallow around 30 meters. They give birth to live young normally one or two. They sometimes give birth on the boat to a perfect mini model of there mum. This goes on until the end of November this is not the only thing we catch but there are very large numbers of sand rays at this time of year.

    November to December

This time of year is the Marlin ,Sailfish season if you are very lucky you might hook one they are thin on the ground these days but are still around. The hay day was about 10 years ago when the pattaya sports club went out and killed every one they caught . The Pattaya sports club is still around but its fishing section has been disbanded thank god. Please put all bill fish back alive and save Pattaya,s Game fishing for our children

    January - February

The fish come in all shapes and sizes in these waters and at this time of year there is no odder shape than a shovel nose ray. A cross between a shark and a ray these fish can grow to 200Kg, we landed one 70kg this year and a few around the 60 KG a friend of mine has landed this ray he says over 150 KG. The more we catch the better we will know just how big they grow we now have some very big IGFA scales to weigh mobby dick if you land it. The other fish we catch at this time of year are very large Cobia, Andy has landed one 35 KG at the end of January a personal best cobia for him

    March - April

This is what we think is the best time of year for deep sea fishing in Pattaya with huge shoals of dolphin fish showing up they tend to be a long way out but these fish are one of the best fighting best tasting sports fish in the world. The bonus is there are large sharks feeding on them and there is a good chance of a tiger shark with our new Penn 12/0 reel loaded with 200 Lb line ( If you have had a heart attack or not in good shape do not fish for sharks. )

    May - June

A time of year were we go out and catch a mixed bag from queen fish to grouper there are fish here all year round and some fish are here in big numbers at certain months but remember there are always fish. Some of the best fishing in Pattaya is in May and June it is just we will not be targeting one kind of fish

    July - September

This time of year is when the Queen fish show up in larger groups sometimes its pure madness as they jump around the boat when hooked in a mad attempt to get free. They are great fun on light tackle and fall to a silver spinner, small fish and small squid do not let the size of the bait put you off, Queen fish are great fun.

No need to apologize, who'd want to take their lady fishing anyway? The whole point of fishing is to get away from them.

DD, is this post from you or the Pattaya Fishing Charter Group? I have been an avid fisherman for over 40 years and am looking for some GOOD deep sea fishing. I have managed to bring over some of my personal fishing gear and used to target good eating fish rather than bill fish when in Mexico. You posted a good description of Pattaya fishing and I am looking to target Dolphin (Dorado) and Wahoo along with any white fish such as Grouper or Snapper. What is your experience with the area fishing? What are the best eating fish (I am not a big fan of Tuna)? It would be great to hook up with other avid fisherman with the idea of catching rather than going out and just soaking your bait. Any ideas guys?

^That was taken from a diving web site, the fishing will be quite away from Pattaya itself, think rawlins went on a fishing trip and they fished around Bang Saray.

Thanks for that DD. I would think the better fishing is on a 2-3 day trip on a bigger boat since a lot of the fish are taken by the local fisherman. It all depends on where the bait is and I have read a little on fishing around Thailand itself. I will continue to dig a little more into the actual fishing scene. Oftentimes, the picture is painted a little rosier than what acutally happens to promote the charter business and the truth can only be obtained from a few seasoned skippers or spending the money yourself to figure it out. I prefer the former and if there are any old salts out there that have fished Thailand for years and know the best times of the year and best places, I would be willing to have a little chat. Please PM me if you have any thoughts.

Fresh Prince, once I have figured things out a little better, I will let you know. It is always good to have a group of fisherman go in together to charter a boat with a good crew. I hate wasting time with a crew that is just out for the boat ride and like to have some meat on the table. Dolphin are fun to fight and exciting fish to watch (not the Flipper species of dolphin, of course) and I have caught lots in Mexico and Baja. They are in the tropics like Hawaii, Bora Bora and other waters and are plentiful if the bait is around. Wahoo, or Ono as the Hawaiians call them, are not as plentiful but much more fun to catch and eat. A great white meat that is flakey and takes on the taste of whatever it is cooked in. Same goes for grouper or snapper that are usually caught off the bottom. I know there are some other great tasting fish in the waters of Thailand and I look forward to learning more about them and how they are caught.

Theres OK fishing in the Gulf if you head out a bit, but I doubt it would rate as a top class game fishing destination anymore. If you're a real afficionado, I'd think about heading to the Andaman side.

The Pattaya Sports Club organises charters, and has a decent gallery of what you're likely to catch-

Thanks Sabang, I have added to Pattaya Sport Club to my favorites and I will do more research. Looked at the pictures and only recognized a few of the species and would be interested to know which are the good eating ones. Maybe they all are if enough sauce and spices are used, but I do enjoy the milder tasting fish. The only way I learned Baja and Mexico fishing was by trial and error. Watching the pangas and cruisers come in to see what they caught helped. I guess I will need to spend some time at the docks to see what is caught and who is catching. It would be great if I lived closer, but I am up near Udon and will need to talk the little lady into taking some trips. Any other leads would be much appreciated.

Maybe safer to call them Mahi mahi to stop any flipper activists getting confused.

I've seen them on fishing trip pictures from a tour that was running out of Koh tao I think. Great looking fish and are supposed to have one hell of a fight on them.

Have you got any pics of previous catches?

I have tons of pics of catching Dorado or Mahi Mahi but they are packed away. Here is one that looks like it was caught on a fly rod. They give a pretty good fight but nothing like a tuna. They like to jump and are acrobatic during the fight and will change from a luminescent green color to gray and blue after they die. This is a bull (male) and the females do not have a rounded head and are usually smaller and more streamlined. Great eating fish.

Been out from Pattaya on a few daytrips over the years and to be honest it is not up to much . Treat it as a fun day out and if you do catch anything big - or small- then it is a big bonus ..

The Thais have cleaned it out .

    Cracking boat Mr Jari .
