    Loy Kratong in Thailand Pattaya

Well as it is Loy Krathong lets see what us farangs have to do, first you have to take a picture of where they have decided to make the Krathongs, generally this will be somewhere on the floor right in the middle of where you would normally walk, this is regardless of how many tables and chairs you own, Loy Krathongs are made on the floor and you aint gonna be able to change that, it is part of the culture.

As you can see the whole family likes to get involved including numerous dogs.

In an ideal world for your base you would use polystyrene, this is great for floating and lasts forever, but alas the treehuggers say polystyrene is bad for the rivers and seas of Thailand, so you go and chop a nice tree down to be the base of your Krathong, banana trees seem to be the most popular, they chopped down a 3 meter high banana tree and used about a foot of it so not much went to waste.

Now you have to make your Krathong green, we used leaves for ours, but if your using polystyrene then a nice lead based oil paint would last for years and years, infact in years to come you might meet up with your Krathong again a bit like sending a message in a bottle, ours if we are lucky will only last a week or so well apart from the candles

There's a few of them round today so we got loads of different ones.

Well thats some of the tops done, next we shall do the sides.

Ok so we have the tops of our banana tree Krathongs nice and green now, if your using polystyrene you will need to wait for ther paint to dry, that lead based stuffed takes a bloody long time don't it.

So now we gently the fold the small cut off pieces of the banana tree leaves that we killed and mutilated earlier, a small pair of scissors is fine to do this to get nice squares that can be folded, these side pieces can be stapled with low quality stainless steel staples, or you can glue erm I suppose, or they got these little tiny pieces of wood that they shove through them like spikes to keep them in place, lots of choice here, personally I think a nail gun would sort this out a lot quicker.

Here are 3 photos I took last night using a canon 400D with 50mm 1.8 lens. The floats were moving so most of the photos were blurred, but these were some of the few in about 50 that came out looking good.

Making Loy Krathongs can be very tiring and generally takes them all day with loads of rest breaks.

But hell, these ones don't look too shabby, okay you could buy them from the street vendors for 1 or 200baht each I suppose and save all the hassle and mess.

Next it is off down to the beach

"In Bangkok, vendors at Pak Klong Talad, a major flower market, were doing a brisk business selling traditional krathongs made of banana leaf and decorated with flowers at average prices of 30-to-35 baht in the evening."

    Pattaya Loy Kratong Festival

Ok ok, I just had a quick look at my pictures and here they charge 30 to 50baht each, but they aint as nice as the ones my girlfriend and that made

    A miserable Loy Krathong seller.

I am not sure what they fuel these with, but when they go up swaying all over the place they leave a flaming trail leaking out of them and people start screaming and warning each other, still, it's all good fun.

This one is just about ready for lift off.

Not as nice as my Krathong.

    Loy Khratong at Mabprachan

Well the traffic along Soi Siam Country Club was apparently horrendous, to the point where a few people turned back. We avoided it by heading around the other side of the Lake, and driving up around 6.30 p.m- i guess it gets worse later. Lake Mabprachan was busy- there were two funfair type areas, one on each side of the lake, and plenty of family groups scattered by the lakeside. The bars of course were humming.

The girls like to get dressed up-

But not as over the top as seems to be the norm in Pattaya and Jomtien.

Just for the record, the banana isn't a tree, it's a plant.

We had to leave Jomtien in the middle of it and saw a few bush fires on the way to the airport probably caused by 'flying condoms' or fireworks.
