Went for a walk this morning around Jomtien, a nice day for it.


And found this place which is new.



It's in the location of where the ill-fated Sunrise Tacos was. That would be just East of Jomtien Complex building (Shenanigans location) but before you get to Simons Fish & Chip shop.


Tried the roast lamb pie, chunky beef pie, and a sausage roll. All were excellent, the only minor problem being the pies are baked in the tin and were a bit hard to get out. Apparently the hot-window is loaded with all their different pies by around 10:00am, I was there earlier than that but still left happy. Looks like the business has only just opened and I look forward to going back once when they're in full swing.

So there we go folks, there's now an Aussie pie shop in town

^ No mate. Not sure exactly what goes inside a sausage roll (have never tried to make them) but I'm fairly sure it's pork mince and spices.

Great stuff, here in Lao I occasionally hanker after a decent pie , best ones I've found so far are called Lady pies made by an Aussie in Phuket and sold out of a few minimarts here, closer to home an Aussie not far from my gaff makes a bloody good sausage roll, can even find chi ko rolls and dim sims, fuk the diet!

I had my boy at home in Ireland while I was off-shore Norway. He was four years old and we stayed for about twelve months. The weather really got to him. We brought him to the beach one spectacularly beautiful morning and the heavens opened. I told him we had to go back to the cousins apartment near the beach. He broke down crying, said 'I fucking hate Ireland Dad, I want to go home to Thailand' Bless him,I didn't even know he could swear properly.I had him and him Mum on a flight home the week after that.

^You're 100% right there Nige. But at least he's trying something that Pattaya has never had before, unlike someone opening the towns 2000th Bar Beer sort of thing and hoping it survives while he drinks himself to death.

The location is good, but it's last 2 businesses were also food based (Sunrise Tacos then Subs and Suds) and they both went under. Having said that, you can get good Tacos or Subs at many places around town so what they were offering was far from unique.

Not 100% sure, but have a feeling there have been a couple of pie shops previously in and around Patts?

Think there was a decent butchers along Jomtien that also did good pies?

Same here,though looking at the set up,he's spent a fair bit on equipment etc,plus the other outlets catering to expat foods,I'd suggest to him to expand his range of products,continental meats thai foods to attract different clientele.

There's only so many pies you can eat.

Good luck to him though, running a business is a very serious endeavor and the newbie can go under in a flash.

Nidhog, you'd be thinking of Yorkies most likely. Not sure if they're still in business but their pies were not good. That I can recall there was Pats Pies on 3rd Road about 10-15 years ago. Location (for back then) was WAY off the beaten track and the pies were ordinary at best.

There was also WMM (I think it was called) more recently on Chaiapreuk 2 which you need a cut lunch and a compass to find. But I did one time while in search of the elusive good pie in Pattaya. There was a Farang owner/manager behind the jump who I got to chatting with about the pies and sausage rolls they were knocking out, and he was keen to show me the process in the kitchen above the store. This poor bastard had lost the plot, the kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it, none of the staff had any basic food handling hygiene wear (hair nets, gloves, etc) and there were 3 fucken CATS prowling the floor where tubs of frozen meat were thawing out!. No thanks, I was out of there like a shot.

Here's a pic I took earlier this year of a typical meat pie found in any bakery in Oz. It really doesn't matter which bakery you go to in any state, the pies are uniformly good.


Why someone hasn't been able to copy this, till now, remains a mystery. Next step is for one of Thailand's Expat "Master Butchers" to be able to make a good pork or beef sausage that appears in the supermarket fridges. Currently, there's no such thing.

Correct Terry, I think that's why he's also getting into sandwiches and cakes and coffee sort of thing too so he can appeal to a wider audience. Getting into the food business in Pattaya, which is well past saturation point, is a gutsy move.

AO the fat content is the a major factor in a good sausage, I to think the pork here is OK,though there farming methods very different to our home countries pork and the climate.

I don't want to sound cocky but according to many who have tried them over the last 2 months say my wife's pies and sausage rolls are the best they have ever had.

I have tried the Lady Pies made in Phuket and although they are acceptable are nowhere near as delicious and are too expensive.

At present she is moving the produce through established bars whereby I deliver them and the pies are sold hot or cold.

She also makes Lasagna, masaman beef, veal or chicken with Rhoti and other meals such as mini Sunday Roasts and Hamburgers I have labelled high quality fast foods that are microwavable.

It is my feeling you don't need to go to the expense of setting up your own outlet as there are 1,000s already out there.
