New Restaurant - Thung Klom tan man 9

Did anyone notice that this place turned orange?

I noticed it and thought at the time it would be a very good place for a restaurant. Location gives lots of parking, easy to get to, interesting building, and convenient enough for all on the dark side.

Seems someone else had the same idea, and on Wednesday they had their soft opening. We popped in last night on a whim to check it out and we were not disappointed.

Now firstly I must say that the name completely escapes me. It's something like "Secrets" or "whispers" or something like that - reminded me of a 1980's restaurant name but I completely forget what it's called. Basically the name is shit, but do not let that put you off (note to bloke who owns it, the name you want is "The Orange House" by the way... and this should be your logo/ sign")

and not the tosh you have for a sign right now. But I digress.

Anyway, aside from the free consultancy to the owner, lets take a look at the place.

Firstly, this is in soft opening mode which in my mind means that little mistakes in service is acceptable, but the food quality must be spot on from the off. In both regards, the place fully lived up to my expectations.

The first point to be addressed (ptba) is that when you park up, its a little confusing how to enter the place. We were not alone in not finding a door, then drifting up to the main road, taking a peek, and then finding nothing, going around the back of the building, walking past the pot wash and the kitchen, to find a nice outdoor sitting area with 2 large tables and one small table, each with umbrella. Well appointed, but with a few mossies about and no mossie guard for patrons to use (ptba 2) we moved inside instead. Inside the seating area is split into two sections. One sections has a wall length comfortable booth bench seating affair, but we decided against that as the lights were far too bright (ptba 3) - so we headed to the main area with 5 tables to seat 4 people. The chairs were high back purple velour and very very comfortable. The tables sturdy with fresh linen.

We ordered our drinks and viewed the menu - G+T for the lady, and I had a carafe of house red

The menu is luckily not too big (often a sign of freshness), and comprised a meat, chicken, fish and vegetarian entree selection, with a Thai section at the back. A range of starters that looked tempting but not for us which was lucky as the fresh baked bread arrived with a small pot of liver pate as well. This was very nice (ptba 4 - small plates needed if you are going to serve crispy bread with pate - we had to balance our dirty knives on the bread basket).

The missus ordered the seared Tuna Steak Mediterranean - the salsa on top had a nice touch of dill in it, and was very nice indeed. The sauce you see on the side, a pepper gravy was completely surplus to requirements and if she had poured it on the tuna it would have destroyed the dish (the only criticism of the kitchen.....that is a big mistake). It needed more of the balsamic reduction (dark brown shiny stuff) if anything, which itself was very good indeed with just the amount of sweetness and tartness to pull out the flavour of the tuna.

You might note that the plates are massive. I am sure they will get broken soon and normal sized plates will take their place when the owner gets bored buying them all the time. More platters than plates, however the food presented on them does not get lost on it.

I ordered the mixed grill which had a lamb chop (pink), steak (medium), herbed chicken breast (well done) and pork steak (well done). All cooked perfectly, and luckily the extra gravy I wanted was taken from the missus plate.

Not much to say about a mixed grill - it does what it says on the tin. It was well cooked, and the gravy is very very nice indeed. Not too much bite from the pepper unless you crunch one of the corns.

After polishing that off, we looked at the puddings. From memory, Tiramisu, bourbon Sabayon, crepe suzette, baked Alaska, and Chocolate mouse were the choices (no cheese board? what's that about? unforgivable in this type of restaurant). We first selected Baked Alaska but they had sold out (ptba 5 - staff should know what is avaiable and not allow you to order, and then come back and say Mai Mee), so instead we went for crepe suzette to share. I watched expectantly to see if the chef would come out to the bar for the orange juice and Cointreau which he did - fresh made then.

Scrumptious. Although not made at the table side, it had been made properly and flambe'd in the kitchen. Crepes too thick, more pancake than crepe though.

Total cost of the meal a very reasonable 1360 baht and I must say that as long as they sort out the foibles of service and the owner does not make the cardinal mistake of passing the chef duties to some clueless uncaring somchai, then this will be a regular place for us.

    Enjoy

On the road where Phutara village is, but before that on the right side. Heading from Nurm lub Wan up that road, Classic Villa village on the left and a bit further on the right its there just before the road that leads to the Mungo Bar or whatever it is called.

True - no option for anything else either. However, they were nice though - not the cheapest of the cheap.

Crazy how you recognise a building but can not place its location, pass it almost every day, must give it a try.
