The end of Pattaya sex tourists?

Fearing military, Pattaya rushes to eradicate sin

PATTAYA: Officials are racing to clean up Pattaya’s beaches and vice spots to try to shake off the “sin city” tag and prevent the military stepping in as they have done in Phuket and Hua Hin.

Pol Col Suppatee Boonkrong, deputy commander of Chon Buri Provincial Police, who took over as acting head of Pattaya City Police on June 3 in the wake of the coup, said he was aiming to eradicate all prostitution.

“I want to completely change the image of Pattaya from being sin city to a friendly town that everyone can enjoy,” Pol Col Suppatee told the Bangkok Post Sunday. “Safety is our number one concern and that is what we are trying to bring back to the town.”

Pol Col Suppatee said reports of thefts had fallen since special patrols began arresting 20-30 bag-snatchers and thieves a night.

He conceded that there weren’t enough police officers to tackle street prostitution so they were being assisted by police volunteers in night-time sweeps. Typically, they were sending out groups of two to four police accompanied by four to eight volunteers in vans and trucks. The volunteers have no arrest powers, but can help compile evidence by taking videos, Pol Col Suppattee said.

“I told [the police officers] that the number [of arrests] this year has to be more than last year,” said Pol Col Suppatee, adding he was aiming to totally eradicate street prostitution. “This is my version of returning happiness to Pattaya town.”

Thitiyanun “Doi” Nakpor, the manager of Sisters, a health counselling centre for transgenders, said police were targeting ladyboy sex workers whom she had visited in custody. She claimed a police officer told her that they had been set an arrest target of 100 sex workers a night.

“We are arresting anyone for whom we have evidence of trying to trade sex for money,” he said. “Ladyboys happen to be the majority of people we arrest.”

Pattaya City deputy mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said they were trying to “keep things under control to prevent the National Council for Peace and Order taking over the situation as they did in Phuket and Hua Hin”.

Chief on the list was stopping beach chair and umbrella renters breaching rules on their allocated space of 7m by 7m, operating outside the designated hours of 7am to 6.30pm, and cooking on the beach, which is prohibited. They were also asked to remove chairs and umbrellas from the beach outside of the operating hours.

Mr Ronakit said since laws regulating the beaches came into effect in 2000 the situation had swung out of control.

“There are now 216 operators on Pattaya beach and 467 operators on Jomtien beach. None of them strictly follows our rules,” Mr Ronakit said.

The deputy mayor said he had sent out inspection teams to measure the deckchair plots and warn the operators along the 2.7km of beach in Pattaya.

However, the operators have reacted furiously at the officials and only the threat of the military coming in has had some impact.

“I told the teams to explain to the operators that if they don’t follow the rules from the town council, the NCPO will come in to take care of the problem,” Mr Ronakit said.

Dum, a beach chair operator in front of a large shopping mall, said he was tidying up his plot and strictly following the regulations.

“I am scared the NCPO will come and clean up the beach like they did to Phuket and Hua Hin. I have no back-up plan, this is the only career I have.”
or just a few months of keeping it on the down low; after all they won't close the Thai customer whore houses I assume. By only attacking street walkers, they are deliberately ignoring the big elephant in the room, no?

According to Doctor Pornthip there is no prostitution in Pattaya.

More waste of taxpayers money trying to cure a illness that isn't there!

What separates Pattaya from the other resorts is the inescapable fact that no one in their right mind would swim in the bay there. There is little natural shade sufficient for visitors to sit under and without the prospect of frequent dips in the sea it would be intolerable to stay on the beach for more than half an hour in the hot season.

I have no problem with the ranks of deck chairs etc but I would like to see all the itinerant morons selling their dreadful shite who patrol the beach every 30 seconds taken out and shot.

A proper municipal bus service from Nakhlua and Jomtien to Pattaya central would be nice too reducing the number of songthaew.

Strictly from a tourist point of view I think the songthaews in Pattaya are one of the best features. Easy and more or less seamless and easy to understand from Naklua to Jomtien. Easy to see out of so getting one's bearings is easy. Lots of locals on board so reduces the fear of being taken advantage of, etc, etc. Run morning until morning.

Compared to Phuket or Hua Hin it is a public transport dream.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

Sadly that is far from unique.

Many lovely looking beaches in the hua hin / pranburi / prachuap area for example have nobody swimming in the sea there for a reason.

Gent, obsessing on floaters again? You left out Phuket's pristine beaches in that hog swallow as well. Every hotel dumps directly into the waters off their balconies.

Lucky that the Monsoon season stirs things up a bit. Look darling, "Tapered Trout!"

The crap on the ocean shores in certainly going to catch up with us before long, unless firm measures and infrastructures are put into place for future habitat.

    Good luck with that.

It's always been the plan to clean up the Pattaya beach and the area between second road and the beach to be all converted into hotels, malls etc. to give an air of respectability to the place with the sleaze confined to walking street and the other side of second road, although why they want to do this when most people go for the sleaze is beyond me.

    Well, no, they don't.

The majority are visitors in package tour groups. There is still a rump of European/wog whoremongers on shagging holidays but these are increasingly a smaller minority every successive year. The expats resident there are mainly retirement folk who may well avail themselves of company but most are either already happily hitched or singletons ploughing their own furrows and content to enjoy a life at ease.

I prefer the way it's heading since that means the bars and restaurants are all upping their game. Personally, if every beer bar was demolished tomorrow it wouldn't be too soon. Most of them rarely have more than a handful of punters and most nights it's fairly evident the slappers outnumber them.

Yep - loads of Asians, Chinese especially.
Get off walking street and the rest of 'whore corner' and you'll see a plethora of restaurants and shops catering to them.
Maybe they're all in bed by the time bb is out on the streets.

Hmmm..cleaning up the town will surely lead to increase prices all round. higher property, transport, restaurant prices as they also move "up market"

Don't forget he's promised to drink a pint of sea water from the bay next time he's in Pattaya.

Which will be fun to watch, whether it's polluted or not

Sure they round up 100 slappers every night. They fine them 100 baht, a slap them on the butt and let them go back to what they were doing.

Pattaya has been basically a shit-hole from it's inception.
